where should a 289 idle at?

My Haynes says 500 rpm for an automatic, I think it was around 800 for a straight drive. It also depends on your enige build. This is all stock info.

i had mine set at 600 when it was stock, and around 850 after i swapped cams.

I believe the idle r.pm.'s they are giving you are in drive with the brakes on but not sure. Maybe they will clarify. I don't have my manual handy or I would look it up for you.

my stang has a manual trans, but you have a good point. if you have an automatic, you need to set the idle rpm in drive, e-brake on, an dthe vacuum advance disconnected and plugged.

Are you sure about the vacum advance part?

should be around 600 while in drive at a stop
