Which clutch would you recommend?

Centerforce. Nice pedal feel and it grabs hard.

I got king cobra ford racing clutch. I like it and will last for longtime as long as throwout bearing is changed at same time.

I have a CFDF in my 91 notch with minimal mods. Easy pedal, 350 bucks.
I have a stock replacement in my 81 notch with the 4.6L SOHC and T45 trans. Minimal mods as well, harder pedal, 250 bucks.

They both grab hard, but the CFDF was worth the extra 100 bucks for the easier pedal.

I hear good things about both clutches stated above. I have a FRPP HD, same grab as the King Cobra but its like doing leg press every time you shift.

The King Cobra isn't my fav and the pedal effort sucks compared to some others, but i've had mine for 4 years now and i beat the hell out of it and it's still grabbing hard so for the money it's a good clutch.

The dual friction is the one i have and i think it was worth it.

I have a Spec 2+ and I think it's completly flawless. I couldnt ask for more

King Cobra

i think alot of clutch pedal feel has to do with proper adjustment and good parts..

a properly adjusted setup with a good quality cable and parts will be very easy.

ive never driving a mustang with a stock clutch too much.

my car had a KC clutch, smoked that on accident and bought the HD clutch (same as KC, but supposed to have a harder pedal)

my car always seemed like it had a stiffer feel with the clutches i have had.

when i replaced the KC clutch with the HD FRPP clutch, i also got a MM clutch cable and the pedal effort actually got easier, i was very suprised at how the clutch felt.

my DD at the time was a 5 speed s10 and its clutch felt stiffer than my mustangs clutch.

i used stock clutch cables and adjustables and etc but the MM cable is the BESY hands down, best quality and has done nothing but help.


recently i added a RAM powergrip HD clutch into my car. and people said the pedal would be stiff, i found the pedal didnt change much from the FMS clutch. might be a HAIR stiffer but honestly the difference in neglibable. but the clutch holds alot better.

so as far as pedal effort, i dont know why so many people have stiff pedals. i have never really had a stiff pedal. only time i did was when i first did my t5 swap and i had some stuff routed wrong and etc. it felt bad then.

i dont know i could just be used to stiff clutches lol

as for clutch reccomendations.

the FMS HD or KC (same holding power) works well.
i used them N/A and with my supercharger with my old combo.
with my old thumper heads, b-cam setup. running 115mph in the 1/4 i could leave the line at 5k+ with no problems. busted off a best of 1.64 60' then.

added TW heads and put in an F-cam, and upped the boost and starting tuning the car. the car is running ALOT harder and will slip and burn up the FMS clutches easily.

wasnt too bad starting out but starting getting the car running really good tune wise and with more boost. car would be at WOT in 4th gear and suddenly rev up like i just stabbed the clutch but i wasnt, just smoked the clutch.

replaced the FMS kit with the ram powergrip HD and havent felt any slip yet.

so my opinion, for a good street car that isnt going to be too radical i think a KC would be the best bet.

Well I'm no clutch specialist but my stocker went out about 3 years ago and I did the same thing asked every one I knew with a stang about what they used and I came up with all of these previous answers too after doing some price comarisons at my local speed shops I got a deal on a King cobra I absolutely love it I don't have a popeye left leg and I actually picked up a couple tens in the 8th which is more than I got adding the cold air and exhaust lol so anyway I'll just say hit the local shops and find out what fits your budget and your taste good luck See ya Jody

A new steel bearing retainer will help out with pedal effort too, the stock aluminum ones can wear out and make things harder than it has to be.

Have to agree. This is all I ever beent told to use over the years.

The King Cobra is a great bang for the buck clutch. Stay away from the FRPP HD clutch, the pedal on that thing is one of the worst I've ever felt. The KC has a great, stockish feeling pedal effort. The CF Dual Friction is probably the softest clutch I've used, but it's hard to swallow the cost, for what kinda power I've thrown at it.

+1 on the FRPP HD. my friend had one in his 95 and it almost sucked all the fun out of having a manual

Yea, my HD clutch was installed by a Ford mechanic, complete with a BBK cable and quadrant, so I know it wasn't done wrong (I usually do my own stuff but I was in a hurry then). Its just incredibly heavy, and I know of others who say the same thing. My leg will actually start to shake if I try to hold it in while I'm sitting at a light. The pressure plate is just supposed to be over-engineered.

I have had both, with the same set-up and a much easier pedal effort.

The King Cobra is about $120 cheaper, but the CF (Gold Class (preferred), Stage II, and Dual Friction) is well worth it to me.

The King Cobra is softer than the HD.

A $40-45 new clutch cable from Buy Ford Racing Parts! is a great investment. It solved my pedal effort problems and is still going strong 4 years later.

Installed a steel bearing retainer, over a broke aluminum one and did not fill hardly a difference.
