Which Rack & pinion do I have?

Ok guys, My rack&pinion is leaking and has some major suck ass slack in it while cornering. Im gonna replace the rack and will be replacing the rag joint with one from flaming river in hopes to get my steering up to par.

My question is which rack do i need, Carquest listed 3 different rack's. My car is a 1991 police package. Im guessing I will need the one they had listed for performance suspension with ford steering gear. Any info on how to tell what I need is appreciated!

Also which place is the best to get a Power rack&pinion. Carquest , advance auto, autozone or napa?

on mine, there were 4 choices. a stock and performance rack (quick ratio) from Ford and TRW. i cleaned mine up. on the back side of the rack, near the shaft to the rag joint, you might find the part number (i did). go from there.

this all assumes the re-manufacturer is that discerning. sounds like a quick ratio rack is what you need. i think someone said that the ford and TRW racks have different bushings...not sure on that one.

just tell them you want the performance rack ,you can replace a standard rack with a performance one,they just bolt right up.i changed the 4cyl.rack out of my car for a performance one.i'm sure a police package would have a performance rack anyway.

What about a manual rack? Is there a manual rack from say a 79 and up fox that would swap into my 89. I would like to do the flaming river one but i thought i could get one from a fox that had manual for a little cheaper? Will this work? If so what year ps rack and pinion would i need?

87 up 5 litre cars all came with a 2.25 lock to lock steering rack, 86 came with a 2.5 lock to lock, just tell the parts store that you need the 2.25 ratio rack they can figure it out form there

i could be wrong, but i dont think that is right. i believe there were a couple of different ratios and designs (Ford and TRW), even 87+. i know this is true of my 88 (there were 4 options).
