While Cruising, Car Goes From 2K RPM to 0 In a Split Second VERY Rapidly...

While crusing at 2K or 1500, the car just goes to 0 and back up VERY fast and several times in succession. Only happens once every 20 or so minutes. I have a new fuel pump. TPS is an AutoZone, about a year old. New IAC. What ould that be? Distributor is stock with 156 thousand miles.

Does the car stall when it does it? Or is it just the tach that drops to 0, then shoots back up? I would say part of the distributor, maybe the dizzy (since you said it was stock).

Yeah it shoots back up, doesn't stall.

Doesn't the tach get triggered off the coil though?

I would start looking for loose wires / connections under the hood.

Maybe even have someone sit in teh car to watch the tach whild you shake the wire looms.

my car did that when the pick up in the distributor went bad. after a couple of day then it would die and take a long time to start back up again. but i would check the wires and coil first. and if you do swap out the distributor, change the ignition module as well. which is located under the tube that goes from the air box to the throttle body. between the strut tower and the air box.

Update: On the way home I was cruising at 70 and it sputtered and BACKFIRED, it hasn't backfired before when it did the sputtering and rapid tach movement stuff. I know I'm running rich and I have an AFPR on the way...any more ideas as to what is wrong?

Change your DISTRIBUTOR. It is $110.00 at the auto parts store. Let us know it it worked.

I had what you are describing. I changed all the basic stune up stuff and some other stuff. Finally I changed the distributor. I only have two hrs. on the car since, but no rpm stutter so far. At 5 hrs. I will be confident. At 10 hrs, I will know that is what it was.

If you can't afford a non stock dizzy, just pull yours out, remove the cap, the shaft, change the PIP sensor, and you should be good to go. Maybe 30 bucks at any parts store, just remember to mark your timing when you pull it out, or you'll have another problem waiting for you after your rebuild....if that's even the problem

Just ordered my new dizzy from Autozone commercial, I should have it within the next 30 mins, Ill put it in and drive a lil and post the results.

FIXED! Aftr around 3 hrs of driving the bucking is gone. I set my timing to 10 deg. and put in that new dizzy. NEVER underestimate the power of correct timing. Im buying a timing light today!

Freaking awesome, my timing was giving me fits too a while back.
