I was driving today and noticed a whining sound. It occured in both 4th and 5th gear between 55-60mph. And i only notice it on the hwy. It only happens on acceleration, not coasting or slowing down. I was trying to repeat the sound and it would occur when i was accelerating pretty slow. It sounds like it is coming from some where between under my seat and the firewall. Its not a high pitched whine like gear whine usually is, its a lower pitch

The reason i dont think its gear whine either, is because this is the 4th set of gears i have had installed this summer. I had 3 sets of motive 3.90's that 3 different shops could not install correct and they whined like a bitch on acceleration or decceleration. So than i just had a pro differential shop instead of a performance shop put in FRPP 3.73's with a new bearing kit. I have had the FRPP gears for 2-3 months and they havent whined.

Any ideas what this whine could be?

sounds more like gears since you are relating the noise to speed. If you heard the noise at certain RPM's , then I'd say it was your tranny.

Not yet, but soon, its sitting in the garage just begging to be installed.

And i dont know if it is mph dependent. I didnt really test that, i was just testing it in a rpm range where my exhaust is quiet enuf to hear the sound. I'll have to check if its mph or rpm dependent.

my car has frpp 4.10 and an mgw shifter....
motive and any other brand pro 5.0 etc etc are said to be loud as balls

frpp gears are the quietest gears out there. this according to mustang specialties.

my 4.10 gears whine and they are of the frpp brand.
MS set mine up, race configuration (bullet proof setup). got to see ronnie wilsons car and everything.

also mgw shifter....... bottom line you have an aftermarket shifter. there is room for noise.

might be the pinion bearings. that is the exact speed range you will notcie a pinion bearing noise. If you take the driveshaft off the pinion yoke see if you can move the pinion flange up and down a little. there should be no play in there if you feel slop the pinion loosen up.. I have seen this alot it usually takes a few months for it to happen after a gear install.

Yea when you add the speed in there it's your gears definitely You are going to have to expect some whine with lower gears! mine does it a little with 4.10's at 50 but it's barely noticeable.
