whining/Whistling sound?

When I start my car I get a Whining/Whistling sound at ideal (almost sounds like a turbo). It goes away after a few minutes though. This only happens when it is cold out and this morning it was 20 degrees. I let my car warm up for 10-15 minutes before driving in this cold snowy weather. What could this sound be?

Does not sound good, can you narrow down where it is coming from? Be careful not to get any hair or loose clothing in the belts while the engine is running...

Mine does the same thing. It only does it when it is really cold outside. It sounds like its coming from the passenger side behind the dash.

I would have to agree with what you said cobraM23. I will take a look tomorrow and see if I can find where exactly it’s coming from. It is suppose to warm back up into the 60s next week so I will see if it goes away. Maybe I will get a video of the sound and see if you guys can diagnose the problem.

Also I just took my stock air filter off and this is what your filter shouldn't look like.



Also there were about 20 acorns in the air filter housing and I found about 30 more stuck in other places of the engine. I got it all cleaned out. Man who ever had this car before me didn't take care of it much. So I removed the stock filter and put a K&N in, I also removed the air silencer. I definitely could tell a difference and hear the difference between that stock filter and the new one with the air silencer removed. My car even seemed happier.

Good going cleanin up the engine alittle, and putting in a better filter.

That pic of the old one LOOKS BAD....that's really dirty...you probably picked up 5hp just from going from a dirty filter to a high flow KN...

Yeah I couldn't believe how bad it was and I couldn't believe how many acorns my car decided to eat. I still don't no how they could get into the stops they were in. Unless the last person that had the car never used it and had squirrels build nests or something. Oh did my video work?

My friends 04GT makes some whistling noise also, at start up or going through the gears slowly parking-it's the intake.

Some cars are louder then others i believe...and you get a whooshing sound.

Might be a good time to check/clean the throttle body too. I'm willing to bet that it's caked with carbon.

You know... If that car was stored with a car cover it could have actually been squirrels that put those nuts there. They could have been living in the engine compartment if it was stored for a long period of time. Might want to check for frayed wires or signs of chewing...

Does it go away when you give it some gas. If it does or diminishes, then it is a vaccum leak. It could be that the gaskest shrink in the cold weather and cause the leak. Them the engine warms up the gaskets and they seal and the sound goes away.

I just listened the video and it sounds like a bearing about to go bad. You might want to take the belt off and turn the pulleys by hand and see if you can hear anything. I've discovered worn out bearings using this method in the past, so maybe it will help. It's worth a shot.
