I have an FR500 steering wheel and I like it. It is a little squishy but it feels good, especially when you first install it. As mentioned before it is the part of the car that you "interact" with the most so why not get one? I'd buy another but the Cobra wheel looks sweet so I'd try for one of those.

Ive got one on my car. Basically the difference is that its a thicker grip compared to my stock '02 GT wheel. Its also perforated leather. After driving my wife's BMW that has an M steering wheel on it, it made me wish i had a nice thick leather wheel on mine. That was the reason for me upgrading, and i love it.

My 98 GT had one when I bought it. I LOVED that thing. When I was on the way to buy the car, I told my friend he could buy the steering wheel. On the way back, I told em "you arent getting the steering wheel!". I sold the 98 a few months ago, and bought a 00 GT, the stock steering wheel was WEIRD to get used to. I just had a brand new FR500 steering wheel, but sold it, car needs other things.

I know that you need to use your air bag with the fr500, but does it come with the back trim? What I'm talking about is the plastic that is attached to the back of the steering wheel that moves with it when you turn.... I ask because I bought a black air bag setup and will be getting black shrouds for the column but will get the other part if need be.

You are correct in that this is not a "visual mod". The FR500 wheel uses a much higher grade leather with perforations and also is heavily padded. It is agreat wheel to hold and feels IMMENSELY better than the OEM one. I bought mine back when they were $150 or so, and I was unsure if it was a good purchase ... until I got it. Being an item that you are continuously in physical contact with, I really appreciate this nice wheel. For me, it was an excellent purchase. And now with around 100K miles of driving since getting it, it is still in near-new condition. I would be surprised if any one ever regretted the purchase of one. Very surprised ...

I looked and it doesn't seem to be on AM's site anymore. I regret not getting one. I have always put it off and got something else.

Start looking for used Terminator Cobra ones. They are double wrapped leather, instead of single like in the GT and V6's. I paid like $50 for mine used, and it still was in perfect condition. Worse case..you can find them used or on forums/eBay all day long. FR500's and Cobra's are all pretty darn good. I love my 03 Cobra wheel.
