who has done it? AWD Aerostar aluminum driveshaft

i've done a search and found all the posts but never got a answer from someone who has done it. i heared people with many different answers like you have to cut it, get it balanced, change yokes, and u-joints.

i found a awd aerostar Eddie Bauer eddition thats getting parted out. i want to get the driveshaft if its aluminum and put it in my car but want to know what i'm getting into before doing it.

u-joints and yokes wont be a problem but shortening it would be a waste of time and then i would just buy a FMS one.

who has "done it"? what was needed to get it to work?

I ve heard you need to change yokes and by the time your done its almost the price of a FMS one or someting.

There's gotta be a reason why I've never heard of this before, like maybe it's too complicated and not worth it. I'd just buy a new one.

I bought three of them for 50.00 each, and sold one for a hundred bucks. I will tell you guys that there is a couple of things that you need to be aware of when, and if you decide to go in this direction. The driveshaft you need must be from a 4wd aerostar and have the factory recall driveshaft in place. There is a silver sticker somewhere on the shaft with the #s F79Z-4602-AA.
The drive shaft has a smaller o/d, I believe the MS unit is 3.5" possibly 4", whre the aerostar unit is 3". If you have issues with your exaust rubbing on your MS unit, this may help you out, and the length is exactly the same as the one I pulled from my cobra @ 45.5"(center U joint cap to center U joint cap).
This is what you need to do to make it work. You will need your old yokes, both sides from your stock steel unit, and you need to put those on the aerostar unit. You will also need a universal joint that accomidates using the yokes from your mustang which is also a larger O/S diameter than the aerostar unit, to the smaller O/S diameter of the aerostar unit. Part # from Autozone is 1-0134, around five dollars each or you can cross reference for a different brand. Last but not least you must be very careful when removing the old U joints and yokes from the aerostar unit, they are in place really, really well. Do not damage the area that hold the U joint snap ring in place while removing the yokes from the aerostar unit, take your time. Reinstall your stock yokes to the aerostar unit, grease up your U joints and you should be set.

here are the specs on those u-joint #1-0134

3.622" yoke width / 1.063" cup dia.

what brand were those u-joints that you got from autozone? we dont have autozones up here in canada.

The brand of U joints were PDQ.

And I thank u for the info also. I found that same unit from my local pull a part for 13.99 plus 3.99 core. It has that stick you descibed. I feel much better knowing the specifics.

I have done this mod and currently have it in the Stang for about one year now. Works perfectly fine and was less than $60 to get it setup. I've ran it pretty fast with that DS and it works nicely!

WOW.. I've never heard of this either, but sounds perfect for me because I have VERY little clearance around my DS with my exhaust..

Yup, the tube is thinner and would fit great with a side exhaust setup. Wanna swap DS? Hehehe
