I have a new ford cast flywheel which was balanced with the shortblock I purchased.

I've heard of horror stories and seen what happens when these things decide to let go. I was wondering if I needed to worry about this or if I should just get a billet steel flywheel instead.

The application is on a 302 roughly 420 FW HP, may see nitrous in the future,

I don't plan on launching at high rpm. Car should be low~mid 12's.

Any ideas on whether the cast flywheel will hold up? If not, does a billet steel flywheel still necessitate a scattershied assuming launch rpm will not be WOT.

Also, is rebalancing (or matching) a new flywheel with the cast one possible? Or will I need to rebalance everything with a new flywheel?

YOur engine spin up time will probably be quicker due to the lighter weight of the billet flywheel and you more than likely have to have the whole assembly reblanced, not to certain about that though so dont take that for sure.
