Who's rebuilt they're own T-5 tranny

Well like it says, I was just wondering who here on SN has rebuilt thery're own T-5 tranny. My trans is completely gone and I was going to moth ball the car till next summer when I had enough money for new stronger trans ( G-Force T-5 ). Its only been less than 2 weeks and I cant stand not driving my car. Im stuck driving my beater ( 91 Saturn ) every day now. Any how I have a friend who has a T-5 from his 93 GT that needs rebuilt that he said he would let me have. So I was looking at the prices of rebuild kits and down loaded the rebuild manual. The kits seem pretty cheap 200-300 bucks and the manual makes the rebuild seem straight forward. So I was wondering who's done it, how did it go and how long has it lasted. I know that i will have to curb my normal abuse of the car so that the rebuild wont break, but I least I would be able to drive it. Any advise would be great.

I've done 3, working on my 4th.

It is easy. These trans go together easy.

Rebuild kits are cheap, but they don't come with hard parts such as gears. You'll need to inspect your gears and more specifically the engagement teeth to decide if they need to be replaced.

I'm working on a step-by-step rebuild how-to by taking pictures of every step of the process but i'm not done yet as i'm waiting to order a couple parts for my current project trans (4-banger gearing to Z-spec gearing)

I've thought about doing the same thing but haven't got around to it. I think they had a write up in the latest isssue of 5.0 M&F about rebuilding a t-5.

It will be at least 4 weeks or so till I can order any parts for mine. We just bought a new car for the wife and Im a little cash strapped right now. Put me down as subscriber #1 for that step by step write up when your done with it. My buddy and I have put gears in the rear of his car and rebuilt the top end of my motor and all went well, so I hope this wont be above my abilities.

I rebuilt mine last winter, it's really a pretty easy deal. I actually got a video on the subject and the guy went through the whole procedure step by step. I ended up having to replace my Output shaft but no gears. It's a smart tranny, just weak. good luck.

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ may also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

Yea, I consider myself mechanically knowledgable, built my own motor, and have basically taken my car completely apart and its still runs. T5's are relatively simply, for the most part you dont have to worry about close tolerances, I think the hardest part I had was getting the keyways right in the synchros'. If its already broke, all you can do is fix it. Thats been my take on my whole car. the more you tear into it, the more your gonna learn. Time is money, and i fou build it 5 times and get 3 more years out of it, its better than paying 500 bucks to fix one breaking it, then paying someone again.. Have at it Bro!!

I got the video from hanlon , rebuild kit and new output shaft since I had bent mine and I just got to drive it friday night after putting it back together and its nice and smooth , piece of cake , you do need a set of dial caliper and a magnetic base and dial indicator to check your clearances

Sounds great, Im going to see if the video is available and I actually have those tools in my box at work as one of my duties iis rebuilding printing units for the press I run. Some of the gear sets or cluster that have to be set have tolerances as small as + or - .0002". This is all work that our machinist's used to do but in a continued effort to reduce costs they make us do more and more of our own repairs. So Im deffinately going for it. What do I need to get to go to the world class gear ratios. I have 3.73 a rear gear and would like to get more use out of 1st and 2nd gear. Both gears are useless once boost gets over 5psi. Im hoping a little taller gears will help with that.
