Why are 3.73s recommended over 4.10s when going FI?

Just curious. I'm planning on doing new gears within the near future, and was going to go with 4.10s. However, I don't want to end up throwing them out for 3.73s if I go FI.

4.10's are good for centrifugal setups. However if you're planning for a roots blower (kenne bell etc) 3.73's would be better. 4.10's and a kenne bell will make traction impossible lol

A couple of reasons...

1: 4.10's your MPH limit in 4th gear is around 108-112 depending where your rev limiter is set. With a blower, nitrous, turbo, whatever if you are running decent boost you will probaly trap at that speed or higher at the end of the 1/4 mile.

2: Traction issues. 4.10's will generally have a harder time getting traction than 3.73's will.

If there are any other major ones im sure someone will chime in.

However, if you are going the route of centrifugal supercharger (like Vortech for example) some people will reccomend 4.10's to get into boost faster.

With a turbo a smaller gear will help the turbo spool quicker, thats why some choose to keep the stock ratio.

Thanks for the clarification, guys. And just FYI, if/when I do go FI down the road, I will definitely be doing the S/C route, mainly a KB.

Trust me 3.73s are still a very fun gear. I was also in your situation back in July and I actually ordered 4.10s but called, canceled my order and ordered 3.73s. I'm getting a centrifugal S/C in the spring and I think 3.73s will be perfect. Heck I already have a tuff time with traction.

I disagree. With ANY blower you'd be shifting into 5th gear at the track with 4.10's.
I have a centri and 3.73's, and I almost run out of 4th gear at the track sometimes.

Another option for you guys with 4.10's at the track running out of gear a little bit before the 1320 could be solved by running a taller tire, it will help out with that.

or you can simply move your rev limiter up with a chip.

If I ran 4:10's I'd hit the rev limter in 4th before going through the traps. I go through at 6400 rpm with stock valve springs.

I m a little bit sceptic here.

With my set up ( see sign) i m trapping at 113-114 and 6000K in 3th

With an auto and a centri, i was afraid my 4.10 would kill me but in fact, it s a blessing.
I m getting into boost fairly fast. Never tried a 3.73 but couldnt imagine them on my car.

Why are 3.73s recommended over 4.10s when going FI?
