Why can't you use stock 5.0 pullies in a 66 with a 5.0?!?!?

I have a 66 and will be putting a roller 302 in it and was wondering why you can not use the stock pullies. I know the 5.0 uses a reverse rotation pump but why cant I use my 289 pump and brackets with the 5.0 serp pullies. Is there an alignment issue, clearance or what. The problem with the crank pulley bolts (3 vs 4)will longer be with a roller motor in it. What about a pulley setup from a 80's crown vic, they used a standard rotaion pump. I have seen pics of 302's with serp pullies and a standard roation pump in a classic.

You can drill the 4 bolt crank pulley to work on the 289 balancer, only problem is pulley alignment with the rest. Or get an 80's vic pulley set and use on the 289 accessories. I have drilled one serpentine crank pulley for 3 bolt, you only need to drill two holes to fit. Now I ain't saying it'll all work, but you can try. I went thru some of this back when I was trying to work with a 289 for my Ranger swap. Some combinations work, some don't when it comes to mixing parts like this. If you only have an alternator and water pump (no P/S) it'll be easier to figure out. I was trying to fit it all with the 289 P/S pump and mid 80's T-Bird/Cougar accessory pulleys, the crank pulley for this is different than the mid to late 80's Vic stuff. It had a V groove 1st pulley and two serpentine pulleys outboard. The Vic setup has two serpentine pulleys (crank)
 
You can do it. 80's vic water pump pulley is not in the same line as the average 5.0 crank pulley. The crown vic did have a serpentive 6 groove wp pulley, but the crank had two sections of 6 grooves, meaning it turned 2 serpentine belts. I was going to do the same thing, but I would have needed the crown vic crank pulley, and alt bracket. If my memory serves me correctly, 1 belt turned the water pump and PS, and the ther one turned the alt and AC. So the Alt pulley was on a different plane as the water pump. Check to make sure. Yes,

as long as your water pump pulley is grooved if you are using a regular rotation water pump, and all pulleys line up. If you use the flat 5.0 reverse rotation water pump pulley with a regular rotation wp you could have slipping of the belt, or possibly smear the grooves on the belt.
 
The Vic W/P pulley only matches the offset of the Vic crank pulley. Shoot me an Email ([email protected], I can't post pics here) and I'll send you back a pic of mine. The Vic setup has the Alternator and P/S on the driver's side of the engine, the Alt. is above the P/S pump. They're mounted on the same bracket. With this setup, the passenger side is free for other accessories such as a Supercharger, extra Alternator, A/C, or whatever.
 
I knew there was a reason I didn't use the Crown Vic pulleys. If the Alt is mounted on the passenger side an is spaced out correctly you can line it up with the crank and wp pullies.

I did just that on my 331. I have it mounted on an engine test stand so I can run it. I fabricated a bracket for the alternator from aluminum and mounted it off the Vic pump, and to the pass side head. I used 351W V belt pulleys and had to place a 1/4" washer behind the alternator pulley to get it lined up with the others. Now I have the fastest, loudest test stand in the neighborhood:rlaugh:

The motor with the 3x2 setup is my 331, it too has a Vic timing cover and waterpump. This pump is the late 88 aluminum one, looks similar to the Stang rev. rotation unit but the coolant ports are reversed on the backside. The pulley setup is from an early 70's 351W, I rigged this up for use on the test stand. I made the alternator bracket from 1/2" aluminum. Also had to place a 1/4" spacer behind the alt. pulley to line it up with the other two. The Ranger has an early 88 iron high volume pump. This one's listed as a Police/Taxi unit in the parts books. Both were purchased locally from Advance Auto Parts or Autozone, the Aluminum one is also available in a high performance version. This is a low volume-high rpm pump, not a high volume like the iron unit. All three versions use the same castings but different impellers.
