Why is it Turbo systems are still in the dark?

I dont get it.. Well maybe I do, but im just curious on you guys' opinoins.

When you mention modding your mustang to anyone, weather a Mustang fan or not they almost always say nitrous or blower. Turbochargers are almost a black art to people.. I suppose they just dont understand the benifits, or do not have the knowledge to install a setup, or something along those lines. It's not like they are that much more expensive..Actually they might be cheaper or just as cheap as a comparable blower setup (price wise to parts included)

Ive been N/A with heads, cam, intake, bolt ons.. then supercharged with two Vortechs, drive in my fathers Eaton blown Saleen, have been in a Nitrous 04GT and have been through a few state of tunes with my current turbo 347... And to make a long story short, I would without question recomend turbocharging a mustang.. Honestly turbochargers are just on a whole different level then a blower IMO.. It's like all other power adders become a joke. Not to crack on anyone, but I just dont get it..

Not every one can weld and mold like yourself. Parts maybe cheap but they are more labor intensive.

i'm with you, the turbo 347 setup is my ultimate goal. i found the kit i want(HP performance) now i just have to save the bucks (4500for the turbo kit and another 4000 for the 347 w/AFR185's). By the way Oink I am sure i will have a few questions when i start getting the stuff.

I have always liked turbo over nitrous or blower. I think people have the wrong idea about them because they are just uninformed on them. Once I get my NA 418 running and pay that off with some other stuff I'm going to start saving for a better block and start working on a jy turbo setup. My bottom end is all forged and depending on the cr I might have to just change the pistons and a few small parts in the engine.

Most of us would rather go the turbo route. Like mentioned having welding experience and having turbo knowledge in general is the issue. For most who don't have that ability direct bolt on turbo kits are costly. Now you can buy a direct bolt on Supercharger from Vortech pretty cheap which is also a factor. Money then becomes the issue not blower vs. turbo. If someone out there made a direct bolt on turbo kit that mounts to the passenger side and costs under $2500 with intercooler then everyone would have a turbo.

But you have to remember, with most turbo kits you atleast get the injectors, mass air, chip, fuel pump ( the good stuff, not FMU's and T rex) You are also getting full exhuast, an intercooler ( none of which are included except prochargers, which arent cheap), and all associated silicone conectors and quality clamps, MUCH more power potential with a mild or stock motor, and incredile torque output!

WHen I had my Vortech setup they supply you with some cheap FMU, cheapo plastic discharge tube, plastic bypass valve, no intercooler, worm type clamps, rubber feed and drain hose with worm clamps, ect...

To me it seems you get a MUCH more complete kit when going with most of the new turbo kits out, verses going with, say, a Vortech..

i'd go jy turbo im a second man....i can weld pretty well plus i think it'd be fun as hell to make my own setup, i just need the money....maybe after i fix my damn car.....i agree with you on teh kits man...they are much more complete than some s/c kits....a procharger is like 4000 with a nice intercooler for our year......for 500 more you'd have a lot more potential

maybe its because alot of people think turbos have to do with imports? Also I don't think there is a real turbo name out there, like NOS, and vortech

yea and much more potential.. with ease of upgrade.. I mean they all use the T4 flange, so in theory you have the potential to run from 350 up to 1k horse from the same kit.. Plus with a good boost controller you can adjust where you want the boost to come in on, ect..

BTW, I was refering to the profesional kits, not the DIY route ( which is obviously much cheaper and requires skill and equipment to fab)

Mike, without a question if I had the funds and another car i'd go the turbo route in a heartbeat. Actually I purchased a fox body car for just this reason. I didn't want to turbo my '95 just because I've worked on this combo for so long that I don't want to change it too much... there is something about running faster than you "should" with an NA car. Would you beat me... hell yeah, and to some that is all that matters. Having said that the first NMRA and FFW races I went to sealed the deal with me on turbos, and I don't mean the power, I mean the sound alone was enought o hook me! The power is just a nice addition! I WILL own a turbo mustang someday, but that day keeps getting farther and farther away, but my '90 WILL be turbo'd.

most people are afraid of what they dont understand... Most people will go with a vortech before turbo because they only listen to the people with the vortech that has not tried anything else.

I have been in both a supercharged car and a turbo car and I have to say there is no comparison between the two. My car with only 10psi boost on 245 street tires felt a lot faster than your car did Mike when you had the vortech when you went to try out thoes slicks.

Most people just dont have the time to make a kit, or the skill which makes a SC a more logical choice

I'll have to agree with everybody on here. First the kits are expensive(eventhough you get everything you need), second I think people don't want to go through the hassle of installing one. Then you have to get the thing tuned correctly(which I've read it is hard to do on a turbo car) or you'll have consecutive blown head gaskets. And like said before not everyone knows how to weld or have access to parts let alone know what parts are needed and where to put them. After all that, the regular Joe would rather spend $2500 for a blower and call it a day.

Id say its part fear of the unknown. and part the old thinking of Blowers are for muscle cars and turbos are for imports. Turbos are great but there is a lot of work involved and they are NEVER smog legal which is a problem for many people(ME!!!). I dont know what route im going its either procharger or Kenne Bell, but that is some time down the line.
