will a bad pip/stator cause a check engine light?

Most of the time, a bad PIP will not throw a check engine code. What are your symptoms though?

tuff to start, poping/bucking (to get the car driveable i have to lock timing out at 13)

RPM on the stock tach will jump up if i go WOT but i know the clutch/tires are not slipping and also the RPM goes up normally on my aftermarket tach. everything on the ignition system is new except the dist right now, thats the next step

a bad stator will throw out a code,i believe its 211 PIP circuit failure.

Does your car every just stop while you are driving?When my stator went bad the car will just died while i was driving and it will take it a while to start back up.Like the other i would check the maf,thats what is sound like it might be.
