Hey everyone, I just blew up my T5 yesterday, and my dad said he would help me out with a transmission, Im trying to convince him that the TKO is the way to go over the ford racing world class T5, so I need to get my info straight.

First of all, I understand that the TKO is a tad shorter than the T5 and requires relocation of the tranny cross member, would this also mean that I would need a new, longer drive shaft?

How much would I be spending if I went with the TKO600, king cobra clutch, aluminum fly wheel, aluminum TKO bell housing and any other required parts? I was thinking around 2100, am I wrong?

Also would you guys also agree that buying the ford racing would be a waste as it only takes about 335lbs of torque, Id imagine that it wouldnt take kindly to powershifting either.

I need all the info I can get my hands on, I did a lot of searching and learned quiet a bit.

Thanks a lot everyone!!

Your setup is going to determine if you want the 500 or 600. The 500 has gearing closer to stock but 1st is a bit higher numerically. I suggest the following parts when you do the swap:
1. Tremec (500/600) - must decide if 10 or 26 spline input
2. McLeod scattershield - good bit of insurance
3. Extended clutch fork (Anderson sells this)
4. New Clutch if you go 26 spline
5. FMS alum. d/s since you need a 31 spline tailshaft
6. New shifter for Tremec (500 & 600 come w/ shifter)
7. Can modify you x-member or get a FMS one that is adjustable - then get welded once mounted.

You will also need or plan for the following when doing this install:
1. GM Synchromesh (3 quarts)
2. New Pilot bearing
3. New throw out bearing
4. Clutch alignment tool for 26 spline (if you go that way)
5. New rear main seal (If yours is leaking)
6. Flywheel resurfaced or new one
7. New speedo gear for trans
8. Now's the time to do any exhaust mods you want if you haven't already
9. Good time to replace your 02 sensors while doing this
10. A trans jack from Harbor Frieght (Tremecs are HEAVY)
11. It taking twice as long as what you expect it to

Thanks a lot for the info man, very helpful, can you give me a rough estimate on price?

And whats your opinion on the TKO vs the T5 with budget in mind? My dad is lending me the money and he really thinks the TKO is "overdoing" it.

Btw, do you have aim?

Hi there, I spent about $2,250 from D&D in michigan, that included the TKO-500, Bell housing, shift fork HD clutch and aluminum driveshaft and spacer. It's a far superior tranny to my old T-5. The only road block I ran into was I had to loose my H-pipe hanger from the cross member and it bolted right up.

I would definatly spend the extra money and get the tremec, you won't be sorry.

P.S. wou will need a tranny jack. Tremecs are very heavy, I used a motorcycle jack It lifts up and forward. worked excellent. good luck.

tunedin302 - Why weld the cross member (for the track?) And why new speedo gear?

Just curious, not tryin to give ya a test or anything :)

No prob man ... Tremec has a speedo drive gear with more teeth than the stock t-5, therefore you need a different speedo gear to compensate for it. The stock cross-member has spot welds to hold the trans mount in place. In order to fit it for the tremec, those spot welds must be cut and the mount moved towards the rear of the cross-member. You don't have to but I am a big fan of re-spot welding that new mounting position into place on the cross member.

The $2200 ball park sounds about right. I was going to purchase an entire TKO500 package from D&D (Great trans shop) in Michigan but ended up finding my trans (TKOII built by Pro-Motion), scattershield, clutch, d/s, shifter, and fork in a package deal on corral.net for $1850. The entire system had 63 miles on it so I couldn't pass it up. I would look around on that site for some deal but would definately look to D&D for a new purchase. I did buy my Fidanza billet steel flywheel (which I strongly suggest you invest in) from them for $200. The Tremec is not an overkills trans if you want something that you can "grow into." It sounds like you want a reasonable street car and the therefore when you get a Tremec you can pretty much consider it the last trans you have to buy for your car. Spending $$ on a t-5 is money that is spent on a unit that may have to be replaced should you add more power in the future. I look at it like if you buy a tremec then you are more than likely buying the last transmission that you will need for your car. Buya t-5 and it is just a matter of time before you have to spend the money again to replace it. Do it right, do it once. JMHO. Good luck with whatever you decide.
