Will dumps pass state inspection in TX?

I was wondering if just dumps at the rear axle no tail pipes would pass Texas insection or what the rules are. I was told it had to exit the passenger compartment. But a GT stock exaust doesn't?

A stock GT does aim down and outboard of the passenger compartment...I've had to install tailpipes twice in the past thinking I could get away with dumps, but the places I took my car (and I searched for one that would) took one look at my car and asked where my tailpipes were...upon looking, they just told me to get pipes, or they'd fail me...unless you know "someone"

Thats how it is in illinois too. You need tail pipes or they will fail you.

I thought that was the rules, but you see so many cars with dumps I thought I might be wrong. THanks for the info.

Tailpipes must exit past at the end of the body on passenger cars.

So yeah, you'd fail with dumps

Mike, per your verbage, wouldn't stock GT's fail the requirement?

This will all vary county to county in what I know of emissions testing. Around here, the rule of thumb is that the emissions folks simply will not put a hand on the ground to insert a probe (that was how it was explained to me when I did not meet the requirement). Again, this all varies locale to locale.

in TX the exhaust has to exit from underneath the car and behind the doors. You might be able to just put a 90* on there and run side pipes for inspection. I just managed to get mine inspected with o/r h pipe and a bypassed smog pump lol

Well i don't know the exact wording, but i don't think it physically needs to pass the bumper. Many cars it's right at the edge.

I beleive it needs to be past the passenger compartment, but since the GT is a hatchback, that would extend all the way back to the taillights.

I wonder how Ford got the '00 Cobra R to meet federal standards with the side exit exhaust? I wonder what loophole they used

I bet your and the other guys' idea about the system ending past the passenger compartment (might one assume that being rearward of the door would qualify?) is how they did it. It worked for Vipers as well.

This brings up a question. What do people do in Texas to pass inspection? I am thinking about moving to Houston, but I will not be removing my dumps. I can't imagine I would pass an emissions test either.

Is it possible to just keep a registration in Florida, if I register it with my in-laws home address? I can't imagine "knowing someone" will help with something as obvious as dumps. Every cop in the state will be able to see the car on the road and know it didn't pass inspection.

I guess I am spoiled in Florida...we have no inspections of any kind.b

in ny the exhaust has to exit past the rear axle, unless it came from the factory otherwise. that answers your questions about the gt exhaust with turndowns
