My dad thinks that to take the tensioner out with the torx bit that you need to do something special or else the thing will shoot a spring out and kill us or something, so just to put his mind at ease, do I need to do anything to remove this other than loosening the torx bolt?

just remove bolt nothing will fly out, remove tensioner and install new tensioner and tighten bolt...just ensure motor is not running and you will not get hurt...lol.

The spring is all self-contained. As long as the belt is off, there will be no outward tension on anything. Just take the bolt out and don't think of anything else of it.

YOUR GONNA DIE

not so much, like posted it is its own little housing and as long as the belt is off first the tension is off of it. there is a little nipple that holds the housing in place under tension to keep it from moving so there is no tension on the unit itself

Well, there is a lot of tension about the WOMD.

I dont blame your Dad for caring about you - it was wise to ask. An example for me: some window regulators can rip your fingers clean off if the motor is removed without pinning the regulator first.

I did some research before doing the window motor on a GM and the regulator had so much spring tension that it had bent the two bolts I used to hold the regulator in place while I removed the window motor. Much better safe than sorry. I applaud you and your Pops for asking first.

Scott, I bet something is. I think a fox tensioner pulley is reverse thread, but I thought I remembered John saying his was conventional (on his car).

When I do them, If it doesnt feel like it wants to loosen, I try to tighten a little. If nothing else, the rocking helps free the threads. Then you hear the click and hope the bolt didnt just snap in half.

The spring will not come out when you unbolt the tensioner from the bracket. If is contained in the tensioner itself. Make sure you take the belt off first...hehe
