will my homemade guidplate idea work.

hello, i was thinking today that instead of having my 289 heads tapped for screw in studs, that i could get some washers that just have enough room for the pushrods to slide though and weld those to the existing pushrod holes on the heads. like the original hipo heads were i was told. you think this could work because i do. this way i can use my stock studs and have full roller rockers without have the machine work done to the heads.
 
first off. trying to weld washers to that iron can be a pain in the butt......

second, if you have press in studs already, they can pull out and even break using a higher lift cam............i'm experienced on that one......

do it the right way once, you'll thank yourself down the road.....
 
no...........the studs can actually pull out......they are pressed in.......if you took a deep socket and put it over the stud with some threads sticking out, put a washer and nut on it and started tightening it down you would eventually pull that stud right out.....they are pressed in......they also are not very big around. by the time you messed with the washers, girdles, etc, you could have had them machined......

thats why the 289 hi po's had screw in studs.......

most the stock cams in 289 302 were really wimpy......low lift, pressed in studs were fine but............with higher lift heavier springs, you need screw ins....
 
Ah, I get it now. I didn't realize this was a thread asking about cutting corners.

Tap that sucker. Period. Go ahead and weld some washers on there if you wish to save some $$ but you shouldn't bypass the threaded studs.
 
to machine heads for guideplates and studs you have to measure the thickness of both. then cut the stud bosses. then chamfer and tap. then adjust the head and open the pushrod holes with a round cutter. this job brings the valve geometry back to stock specs for stock length pushrods. that is the reason for the machine work. you cant just add guideplates/studs without machine work. you would have add length to the pushrod and the geometry would be way off. ask me how i know this.
