will these wheel adapters work?

Theoretically all wheels that are interchangable on the newer mustangs (16 and 17 in) should have the same offset, right? So if I get a set of wheel adapters designed to mount 17" late model wheels on a '66, they should absolutely without a doubt make 16" wheels fit perfectly also.

Next question: Is there anything about a wheel adapter that is dependent on anything other than spacing and bolt pattern, like hub diameter? I want to make sure I get the right thing to bolt '01 16" wheels to granada hubs on a '66.

I think 1.25" is the right spacing, so I believe that barring any variables I'm not aware of, these wheel adapters should work.

Should I get a couple pairs? They're half the price of the kit from mustangs unlimited.

It would be nice to have the adapters hubcentric, but other than that, the eBay ones look fine.

I would think you could get a Machine shop to make you a set of those for cheaper than $155. Theres about $5 worth of 6061T6 aluminum there and some wheel studs.

Just a thought, thats how I would do it...although I do know a good machinst that could just hook me up. But even without a hookup thats an extremely easy job for any machinist.

There are no absolutes. Plus the optimal backspacing on a 17x8 wheel is 4.75 and the optimal backspacing on a 16x8 is 4.5 because of ball joint interference issues.

You really need to check the current backspacing on the late model wheels you are looking at and then make a decision.

There are no machine shops around here that aren't all about ripping people off. I took a pulley in to be modified one time (shave a little off the back and drill a couple holes) and they charged me over 100 bucks for it.

The mustangs unlimited set is $300 so if I can get the same deal for half of that, I'll consider it a deal.

I put the wheels on the car a while ago, just to see how they would look. Just from eyeballing it up and messing around with them a little I figured 1.25" should be what I need. My main concern is just whether the wheel adapters will be fine other than the thickness.

That is with the rear suspension loaded and the front unloaded, no spacers.

rims backspacing

I'm going threw a smilar experience... I have a 66 Mustang coupe and the rims I want to buy are Smoothies II made by Boyd Coddinton they run about $242 each from Discount Tires..... the problem is that I need to have them custom made... everywhere I have read "Mustang Monthly" the November issue has a great article on bigger rims for a vintage Mustang and http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/3636/ has an OK article as well states that the optium backspacing on what I want is 4.75" on 17 X 8 but if they don't fit I'm screwed 1100 bucks... so back to what you have if the rims are 16 X what if they are 7" the total back spacing must be 3 3/4 to 4" if they are 8" they must be 4 1/2 but remember that when you add the spacer it will increase the backspacing by 1.25" therefore moving the rim and tire that much closer to the fenders............... Good luck and check out the articles I mentioned they could save you money and time..

So how would they be made differently if I want them to be hub-centric?

Hubcentric spacers are percisley machined to not only use the wheel studs, but also the shoulder on the axle or brake flange. They can also be machined to be hubcentric to the wheel. It percisely centers the spacer and adds strength to the mounting location.

With wheel spacers wider than 1", you want the best money can buy. Don't skimp on wheel spacers.
