Windage Tray Height

Is there a set distance a windage tray should be at? Is it possible for it to be to far away from the crank? Is it possible for it to be to close even though its not touching? I'm installing a Canton Racing tray in my 289 with a matching 7 qt. front sump street pan and pick up. I'm just curious as to how it should be adjusted.

When I built my 289 many years ago, I used a Ford Windage tray with Ford main cap bolts design for use with the windage tray. No adjustments needed, everything just bolted up and was a perfect fit .

I'm using ARP main cap studs. They are set up with two different theads. One used for the main cap nut, then a smaller thread for the windage tray and those nuts. The tray itself is set between two nuts, so it can be moved up or down at least thats what I thought. But even with it set as low as possable I still had a little clearence trouble with the oil pickup. Nothing short of removing the first nut and putting washers on the main cap nut was going to get it low enough to clear the oil pickup with out messing around with it. So I'm a bit confused as to where it should be and what an ok position is. To make it easier I took these pictures of it assembled, do they look ok?

Put the windage tray where it is supposed to be, and trim it to clear the oil pickup. The tray works better as it gets closer.

The Ford windage tray M-6687-A302 has standoff brackets that mount the tray directly to the studs, without such confusion.

You need such confusion to get it closer to the rod bolts, or to back the tray off for strokers. It's not that hard. Your just nut jamming for adjustable height.

Get it within a 1/16 or so to the rod bolts. Those will hit first.

The second picture is it at its lowest point with out removing the lower nut and mounting it on top of the main cap nut.
