I stopped by an auto glass & tinting shop today to ask about getting the windows on my 05 GT tinted once it is delivered. He quoted me what I think is a fair price, but also informed me that all recent Mustang rear windows have a band of black ceramic just below the roofline which can make tinting the rear window a problem. He said that the band would make the tinting look like it was two unmatched pieces and that it would be more noticeable from the inside than the outside. He also said that what some Mustang owners have done is to cover the black ceramic with a layer of black vinyl (that will cost $30 bucks more). Finally he told me that he didn't know if the 05 would have the black ceramic band on the rear window and I can't tell from any of the pictures I've seen whether or not the band is present. Does anyone know if the 05 production Mustang will have the band? Has anyone had the rear window tinted on a recent Mustang? How does it look? Are there any solutions other than the strip of vinyl?

Window tinting

Picked up my 05 Friday took it to get tinted on Monday. When they layed out the tint on the rear of the car. They then slid it across the trunk and put scratches across my black trunk. When I mentioned it he said "that's why I don't like black it shows everything"! Imagine that. Will never go back there. Point is be very explicit so you don't end up with some inconsiderate person.

2 tips that have served me well over the years on window tinting:

1) Pay more for the high quality tinting material - it's worth it in terms of how it goes on and how it stays on over the years.

2) Go to your local high-end new car dealerships (Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, etc.) and find out who does their tinting for them -- use them to do yours. When they're used to working with cars that cost $50K -$100K, they'll take VERY good care of them inside and out.

you dont have your car yet, and tinting is done on the inside of the window, not the outside

First they measure the window with tint from the outside, lay it out and trim it from the outside. Second if you get the more expensive tint remember that is the metallic tint not the dyed tint. It will last longer but greatly reduce radio reception if the antenna is in the glass- which it is not on an 05 Mustang. Third I picked up my 05 on April 9, 05 Chrysler 300C (yes I had the first Hemi on the ground in the northeast) which is my winter car the 05 Mustang I have on order is my summer car which has not arrived yet. Only one of you was not sleeping, good job chorpeac!

I just got my 04 tinted last week & the guy at the shop explained to me that same problem with the windows. He had a sample where they layed the tint over the dots & what happeneds is the tint doesn't stick completely to the window because of the air pockets. What he had to do is sand the dots down & then he placed a strip of 3M Vinyl Black Tape. I was kind of worried on how it was going to turn out with a 35% tint, but it came out clean. You can't even tell it's there.

notice how i called bs on you having a 05 stang?

its a bad idea to lay out tint on the outside of most new cars, because the inside window does not often match the outside
