Winter driving

Does anyone here drive their stang in the winter? If so, do you have winter tires that you recommend? I have heard horror stories about driving a stang in the winter and want to know if I should invest in some winter tires/wheels or not.

I have driven my stang in chicago and bloomington/normal winters for the past 4 years, this year will be my fifth. Up until last year I rode on my stock tires. Last year I got Blizzacks put on my stock rims, something i should have done in year one (especially since i ran my chrome rims in the salt
They handle amazingly even in ice, i can slam on the breaks with barley any slippage and that was on ice Hope this helps

Cool, thanks. I think it will be worth the investment. I drove a Trams Am GTA in the winter bout 10 years ago and it was not pleasent. hehe... I might invest in a 2nd set of wheels with Blizzak tires, no need to ruin the sweet Bullit wheels that come on the 2004 stang.

I have Goodyear Ultragrip 2's. These things are awesome on snow and ice.

well i drive mine with a 4.10 gear in the back (first gear doesnt get used in winter ) and i have 245/45(or 40...cant remember)/17 and they did pretty decent. dont quite have the funds for winter tires but i think my next set will be setup for summer then different ones for winter but they did a good job anyways

I drive mine in the winter on Dunlop SP5000's and they are pretty good in the snow. With the stock tires I had a very hard time driving in snow deeper than 1 inch. I would reccomend some kind of all season or snow tire.

I always have my traction control off. Austin how did your rims do in the salt?? I have a feeling mine will not look so great if I keep them on during the winter. Anyone know of a place/person selling maybe stock bullit rims or something cheap?

Your rims are the stock ones right??? I think they are high polished aluminum instead of chrome...so the salt shouldn't have as bad of an effect on them. If you want cheap winter rims I know you can buy used V6 rims for next to nothing.

They are the polished... I've never had them like that before, only bullits, etc so I wasn't sure how they'd hold up. Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of getting new wheels/rims in the near future anyways, might as well make them winter accessible.

I used to drive my 02 GT in the snow and hated it. I got stuck in a bad snow storm and tried to drive up a hill....not good. I was sideways the whole time. I got out of the car after I got up the hill and the car looked like a snow cone. Now I have a winter car and the Mach stays in the garage in the rain and snow.

well i think my buddy might be sellin his 16" stock rims off of his v6. he got a great deal on some gt wheels so he will probably be selling his cheap too. ill talk to him if you want

I am looking for a 2nd set of rims myself.... for 2 reasons. I prefer not to drive my current set though the snow and salt, and it's easier to just pull off all for wheels, toss them in bags, and throw on the winter set.

If ya'll know of someone willing to part with some cheap rims, let me know.

i got BFG GeForce 245's and they work fine as long as you dont drive stuid. i drive all winter long in my cobra and i love it

My chrome ones are starting to corode (sp?) but that is after 4 winters, my stock ones i could care less about, but they hold up just fine. really as long as you wash it at least once a week and clean the rims after you drive in salt, you will be fine. mine are corroding where the lugs are, prob bc that is the toughest spot to get in and clean.
If you can afford it, go v6 rims, the skinnier the tire, the better off they do anyway

I live in the middle of no-where and i always get drifted in.... ive got 205-65r 15's

i've had my fair share of these types of moments though...

damn ruts.... lol

i gotta buddy that just moved outta fort wayne and he had to get a beater cause he said ht got so bad. at least here in chicago they plow the streets pretty quickly. still dont like the summer cause you cant put the top down without 5 layers of clothes (doesnt mean i dont do it sometimes )

I use Yokohama Guardex tires on some steel wheels and cheapo hubcaps

Works pretty well. If you're going to get a second set of rims, use a dedicated winter tire.

Well... I wash my car about 3 times a week on average. So keeping the salt off of it is not really a problem. I drive 25 miles each way to work every day. So, I just want to be prepared for winter time. If the stang will drive in the snow decently, then I would rather save the $900 and spend it on something cool, like a cat-back system. hehe

hopefully purdue will plow their roads off pretty good or else i might be regretting living off campus where the buses dont drive out to...especially w/ 4.10s and no trac control
