Winter's Coming

I live in VA and winter's right around the corner, bringing snow, ice, sleet, "wintery mix", hail etc. I'm acquiring this fear of driving my car after hearing all these horror stories of having rear wheel brakes. It's my only car and I need to make it work.

If you're looking for a way to get excellent winter performance out of it then you're going to be disappointed.

A set of cheap steel wheels and some genuine winter weather tires are about as good as you're going to get. Next time you're at the store, pick up two 40lb bags of kitty litter. Anything more than that will just decrease ground clearance. Put one int he trunk and one in the back seat. If nothing else, you'll be able to use the kitty litter help get out when it gets stuck.

All in all, it shouldn't be too awful bad. Wait for the plow to go through at least once before you get on the road. The hardest part is going to be the portions that aren't plowed (your driveway for instance). Feel fortunate though. I'm in western PA and the majority of 2 wheel drive vehicles tend to hibernate for a month or two. Some of them, in the ditches next to the roads. I think the slush we get is worse than winters up north where the snow just packs. Bad winters in VA? Forget it. Park it. Take the bus. The rest of the time shouldn't be too terrible.
