Ok the other day I put my alternator back in and I didnt remeber how it was wired, so i just pluged it in how I thought it was supose to be..
After I started the car and ran it for a little while I saw smoke coming from inside, quickly shut the car off and pulled the battery + out... I took the gauges out I saw that it had completely melted the ground wire in the wireing harness..???

also I checked my battery and saw that its giving out 17 volts? which is really high??
Did I buy the wrong battery?
I dont know how to wire the alternator any one have a good wireing Diagram I have 2 but they suck..

I had the same problem on mine, except the voltage regulator fried..... Most likely the alternator for this fix. Check your field and stator, the push ons go on the larger posts of the alternator and the smaller ones bolt to the field and stator. That and replace your regulator too.... might have fired that too and not know it since its encased! Hope this is some help to ya. :nice:

Here's the schematic for your year...

Edit: You'll see that a couple of them go to the voltage regulator (old years were "externally regulated" alternators), if it is damaged now might be a good time to consider a modern 1-wire (internally regulated) upgrade. It cleans up the engine compartment significantly.

Hey, Nice wiring diagram

:nice:I have been searching for good legible wiring diagrams for a 69 Mach I , I have Jim Osbourn manuals that are copies of the FOMOCO originals. Naturally I have found errors. I have a Hot Rod Wires 18ckt harness that I am trying tof figure out. Any idea where you git this wiring diagram from?
