The (2) 4mm black wires that go into the top of the alternator my Wifes 93GT just melted 5 min ago. It melted about 4 inches from the part that goes into the alternator. What can cause this and where should I start? I took off the battery cables but really need this car repaired by Monday.. help

PS: The car still starts fine and runs fine

2G's could overload the wires. There was a TSB about it IIRC.

With luck, your fusible links burned (but it's not guaranteed, hence the fire risk with stock alts and wiring).

I would do a 3G retrofit. You can get a 94-95 alt at the parts house and you can make a charge cable from starter cables or audio cable from your local stereo shop. Then add an ANL fuse and holder (available at Napa or better parts stores).

This isnt the ideal parts list IMHO but it would be stuff you can source locally (in order to be on the road Monday).

Good luck.
