Wiring problem

After killing the car the T-rex and the in tank fuel pumps would still be running with the car off. So i check all the wiring and the previous owner did some sort of weird wiring job on it . He had power to the t-rex running off of the power wire to the in tank, but he had a wire running to the fuse box slid into a place where the fuse plugs in, and then all the wires running to a relay. I took both power wires to the in tank and rex and ran them to the ignition and my problem stopped. Is this the correct way to wire it up, or did he do it right in the first place.

I hope that you would have a relay in there. The fuel pump usually draws too much current to run directly off a switched power souce (ignition). It will tend to wear the contacts out in the switch rapidly.

Use the same circuit that you have now to drive the relay. Have the pump draw from a fuesable link or breaker that gets power from a source near the battery.

If you want to get fancy and safe, wire in the fuel pump inerta switch in line to break the fuel pump circuit in the event of a crash. You would put the ineritia switch inbetween the 'key on hot' and the relay.
 
Here is a simple block diagram.

The inertia switch is behind the tail light on the drivers side. Just under the plastic in the hatch.
