Wiring weirdness - Your thoughts please

Okay, so I order a new tail lamp harness and turn signal harness for my '68 because of some flaky problems with my wiring and I figured now was as good a time as any to freshen up the 35 year old wire.

I pull the turn signal switch, cut the old wires and get ready to poke the leads from my new switch harness into the old connector (which must be re-used). I'll be damn...my new leads are the female connectors, same as the underdash connectors, what gives? Did the repro people make a mistake.

Oh well, onto project two, tail lamp harness. Pull the rear seats, fastback interior panels and yank the old wire. Get ready to install the new harness. Guess what? Wrong connectors where it plugs into the underdash.

So I do some investigating. It appears as though my car has a '67 under dash harness. I traced some wires and connector types that differ from the '68. This, coupled with the fact that none of the '68 harnesses I bought work exactly AND the turn signal switch has a C7ZA-13B302-F part number. (The '68 is supposed to have a C8 part number).

Have you guys ever seen anything like this? I am pretty certain that the under dash harness in the car is original...it is pretty old, brittle, faded and dusty. Is it possible they used '67 wiring in my '68 car?

Depending on when your car was built, they sometimes use up parts for the previous years models if they work. That is why it is always best to get the Ford part number off the original part. Then try to make sure the new part is same as the old one. Sorry this had to happen to you, hopefully you can take the new one back and get the right one?

I've looked everywhere I can think of on the under dash and can't find a part number tag, but I am thoroughly convinced it is a '67.

The tail light harness I was able to use by re-using the old connectors up front. The wiring is the same.

The turn signal switch won't work. Not only are the connectors wrong, but there are two extra wires as compared to the '67, and the hazard flasher knob is a cheap plastic deal. I want to be able to use the chrome hazard knob off the old switch.

So really the only thing I'm out is the turn signal switch, which I should be able to return for an exchange.

I'm actually VERY excited though that I can use a '67 under dash harness in my car. I had looked for a '68 harness but no one makes a repro. So, I think it will work out better this way.

ps - according to my Marti Autoworks report, my car was built on December 11, 1967...on schedule.

I have a 65 with a build date of december 17 1964 that has some of the earlier 64.5 parts like an oiler spout on my distributor etc. I remember something like this when I had to change my turn signal switch. I had to make a map of the wire colors in the connector and remove them one by one to pull them through a sleeve in the steering column, then reconnect them. Then some of the wires on the replacement weren't the same color as the original so I had to be careful. The repro I believe was from a 66, but I was lucky enough to make it work. Would you be able to take the old one in with you so they can match it up and get you the correct one? Good luck with your project.

the 67 and 68 signal switches use the same terimals just a diffrent type of connector i put a 68 column in my 67 and all i had to change was the plastic connector the terminals were the same look at ur ign switch the 67 had a stud on the back which u bolt the plug to on the 68 it just snaps in hope this helps :0

Is replacement of the tail light wiring harness fairly simple? I'm guessing that the wiring starts at the firewall, runs down the drivers' sill then up and over the wheel well then splits two the tail lights.
