Wont Start, new twist!

My car won't start, not because of a motor issue, when you turn the key everything turns on like its supposed to, but keep turning the key and it acts like the clutch pedal isnt pressed in, it doesnt even try to turn over. when i arc the starter solenoid it fires right up and runs fine. this just happened all of a sudden, any ideas guys?

thanks

Agreed.
If you put a test light or meter on the clutch safety switch, make sure you have 12 volts out of it during cranking.

You can also just test this at the solenoid - look for 12 volts during cranking at the slide-on connector on the top of the solenoid. It sounds like you dont have that, ergo no starting.

If that is not it, the white/pink (IIRC) wire at the ignition switch is for cranking. Check schematics for confirmation.

Good luck.

thanks for all the help guys, can any of you tell me where the clutch safety switch is? under the dash by the pedal i assume?
It is on the clutch pedal arm. There are two switches there and I cant remember if the safety switch is the top or bottom one. I do recall that the safety switch has two wires going into one connector terminal on the switch, and the other has one wire (3 wires in two terminals). Using your test light on each wire while turning the key to crank (with the pedal pushed down) can help.

I would also note that a blade fuse fits the connector great and can be helpful for doing diagnostics if you are not a member of the circus. By inserting the fuse (or a jumper wire), you bypass the switch. DO BE CAREFUL SINCE THE CAR WILL NOW START IN GEAR. I would use this for diagnostics only

Good luck.

Or could be the solenoid is out.
I agree with you - it sure could be. :nice: I hit that in my first post. If he has no trigger at the solenoid, the next logical place upstream to check is the safety switch.

hey guys i havent been able to try this in awhile, but im looking to bypass the switch, there are 2 connectors under the dash that go into the white box with the plunger like thing, the lower one has 4 wires, blue and yellow and black and white, 2 of each and the other has 2 red and white and one of another color i cant remember, can someone tell me what wires to connect?

It has been awhile since I played with my wiring. As I recall, the correct connector has one wire in one terminal and two wires going out of another terminal (3 wires total. One feed from the ignition switch - white/pink. And two out were red and something IIRC. ONe red/[unknown tracer ] wire goes to the solenoid and one goes to my early-style TFI).

Good luck.
