Work In A Storage Unit?

I recently moved from PA to Charlotte, NC. I was given little notice from the company I was working for and pretty much had to move in just a few weeks. Due to this, my car is torn apart in PA in my fathers garage and does not start (Was in the middle of an engine swap).

I am considering renting a 10x20 storage unit to work on my car in. I've already contacted several places and they said it wouldn't be a problem for me to store on and work on my car there. I can get a 10x20ft unit with electric, locked, in a gated area, with cameras and a keypad, access 24/7, etc.. for $104/month plus a one time cost of $18 for the administrating fee and $12.90 for the lock. I figure I could fit my car in there, a tool box, and some parts.

Has anyone ever done this before? Any advice? Suggestions?

A buddy of mine did. grab a beer fridge and keep it stocked and you've got a great hangout. I'd check withyour insurance carrier to get a rider for coverage at an outside facility like that.

Rented a single bay (about the size you're trying to rent) with electric for over a year.
Built a whole car in it. Little cramped but no complaints. Works in a bind no problem.

Moved into a double (same place just little over 2x the space) to build my current car. Still no complaints.

Moving from PA to Charlotte, NC is a real climate change- - it gets really hot during the summer months. You best be prepared to spend some $$ to buy a big fan to keep things comfortable. Fat old guys like me need lots of cool air, so it gets to be a challenge to work in a hot garage in the middle of the summer.

While you are scoping out the storage shed scene, remember that if you have an big air compressor that you might need a 220 volt circuit for it. Having enough electrical power for everything you need is something to watch out for.

A fridge in the unit is a great idea for sodas & sandwich stuff. New or used, it is a great addition to the comfort items that make working away from home less of a chore.

Maybe I'm the only one thinking about this.. but where do you take a leak? I mean drinking all those beers one will have to "break the seal" sooner or later

WOW! 20x10 for only $104 per month is a screaming deal. The same storage space where I live is over $320 per month.

Yeah, I'm surprised as well. But, after checking multiple places that seems to be the going rate. Some have the first two months half off, or they run a deal where the first month is only $1. I think this one is my best bet because there is no long term lease; it goes month by month. I plan on getting my first house (with a garage of course!) in the next 1-2 years, so that'd be my best bet.

$104/month is cheap. When I had a 10'x20' for my Mysyang, it was $350/month.

They were pretty strict on not working on your car in the unit. But I did it anyway.

Damn- every storage place I checked with around here said I cannot work on the car for insurance and liability reasons. Are these national or private storage places? I would love to rent a small unit, throw a 2 post lift in it, a fridge, a couch and all my car stuff.

Mine is private. 220 outlet for my welder and $300. Also pretty damn big for a rental and a mile from my house.

Can't wait to move out of it but it's doing the trick
