Working on the Panoz: 5.0 noob needs more questions answered (PICS)

Hey guys who know 5.0 motors... turns out the Panoz has an australian Falcon motor. It's still a stock 5.0 but with the manifold flipped. I have some questions:

What are these two ports on the back of the throttle-body? Are they coolant lines for the factory application?

How do I remove the throttle cable w/o mis-adjusting it? I want to remove the TB, but my Z06 is fly by wire so I'm not familiar w/ a traditional TB.

I don't think it's good to have this blocking your air bridge... out she goes.

The GTRA filter shield will be getting stripped and repainted wrinkle black. Here's how the car looks.

^ Thanks... no need to hook up the EGR on a race car... I'm going to remove it and block it off. Going to cap the ports on the right side.

My buddy who works for motec says it's a dual sensor TPS. Some cars use one to backup/check the other.

Ditto on all of them other than Pic 1.. I think those are both coolant lines. The stang EGR spacer has an inlet on one side and an outlet on the other so the coolant can get into the heater core. Yours looks like the inlet and outlet might be on the same side and it loops through the spacer.

I would blow some air through one of them, it should come out the other.


I would consider leaving the aluminium tube inside the flexible (bouncy) part of the intake tract and maybe just trim and smooth out the ends of the pipe to make it a better transition. As it sits in the photo it is definitely creating some blockage but once trimmed and rounded, would make for smoother airflow than the stock bumpy rubber section..

Or just replace the whole thing with pieces of PCV and nice silicon couplings..

Thanks! Between here, corral.net, and a few local mustang buddies I have most everything answered.

My father and I drove these at the Panoz school at Road Atlanta back in '03... they're a little slow but so much fun. I've been tracking my Z06 for the past 5 years and it's finally time to make that a waxer again... I'm putting fresh paint on it and I did my own targa conversion (well it's in process car goes to paint Sunday).

It will accept all oem parts for the targa now... got a clear coupe panel for it.

We got the Panoz a few months back... I auto-xed it once just for hell and it will make it's VIR debut end of February w/ NASA.

Some more questions...

What plugs are good for a stock 5.0? What should they be gapped at? I run NGK TR-55s in the Z06, is that a suitable replacement?

well the mustang doesnt go trough the EGR spacer to get to the heater core, it just has 2 nipples on the hard line going to the heater core to allow some of that coolant to circulate in the EGR spacer. When I put the Cobra intake on it did not have provisions for the EGR spacer, so i simply connected the two nipples togeather with a small tube and now it just simple runs paralell to the hard line!

basically what im saying is that it is not necessary....If im not mistaken it actually warms the air a little, from what i've heard..

Actually, you are correct, it only branches off, doesn't go through.

However, I've never seen a final answer for the plug vs no plug of the egr spacer coolant. Clearly, Cobra intakes did away with it but the EGR is pulling exhaust gas right? I would think exhaust would be hotter than the hottest coolant (though the coolant is still hotter than ambient air coming in from intake?)..

The coolant lines are to cool the spacer. If there was icing concerns, they would not have done away with the lines on Cobras and 94-95's (those dont have icing problems. :p ).

For plugs, stick with some copper versions. Our ignitions dont like plats (plat does not conduct as well as copper, but copper doesnt last as long). Most of us use Autolite/Motorcraft plugs, though copper NGK's are somewhat popular (moreso with the 94-95 crowd than Fox III owners). I've used them in bikes and another EEC-IV Ford, but not in the stangs.
