Why no more deadlifts? They're the next best thing to squats

Gee guess the 20yrs of training in both powerlifting and bodybuilding have been a complete waste due to excessive strap use..

A few years back I got a herniated disc in my lower back and stopped them so my back could heel. Just never got into them again. With good form it wont be a problem. Im currently starting a new routine so maybe I will squeeze them in once in a while.

Hopefully sometime soon they'll have artificial disks to replace damaged ones, my G/F has the same thing, sucks ass

Sorry should have specified..not compeditive it's my hobby/passion, I've not felt the need to compete though I have assisted in the training of several who have. If you truely consider using a set of straps candyass...then son you need to learn to train heavy.

Well I'm glad I never had the ill fortune of being 'trained' by you, otherwise I might have 20" biceps and 10" forearms!

Oh that was moderately funny ....I sense you've got it all figured out...must be great!!! all this time and I'm still learning something new all the time...but that's just me. Though I can't promise 20 inch bicepts I bet it's not too much of a reach for us to get you to your desired 10 inch forearm quest but hey we can't all be genetically gifted....just kidding, just kidding.

Note to self...straps will lead to my demise as a weight lifter.

i was debating making a thread about this. i started going to the gym a month ago (used to go in high school 5 years ago), i have made it a routine now and have just started stepping it up abit in terms of lifting. i actually look forward to going to the gym and since it so close i can go to the gym from work and be home by 5:45.

i am trying to put on some pounds, and have made some changes to my diet, i always drank lots of milk and drink lots of water anyway. my main question is what are some snacks i can take to work to help me eat there, they can't be like mini meals cause i don't have time at work. with my job in an 8 hour day i only get one 20 minute break, but once i get my machine running i am able to eat while i work but not long enough to sit and eat alot. i hope that made sense, i just want to be able to eat all day as i work but not having to sit down and eat

I've always used straps when my forearms hindered me in shrugs, DLs, and rack pulls especially. But I trained forearms directly too, so...

Viking, for all you know DMan can have genetically big forearms. I've got a friend whose forearms are almost as big as his upper arm and he barely lifts.

No unfortunately that's not the case genetics were pretty average but I've done the best I could with what me ma and pa gave me...all you can do really.

Why resort one's self to having weak hands? I don't get it. If I can't deadlift 500lbs because the bar is slipping out of my hands (as it used to) then obviously I need to improve my grip strength. It's that simple. If you can't lift the weight, then you can't lift it. When you use straps, they are doing some the work, not just you. So are you really lifting that weight, or just some of it?

Now I understand your thinking and your not going to change your train of thought....I wouldn't expect you too, but IMO your focusing on forearm and hand strenght just a little too much. Any of the basic exercises when done with substantial weight will have a wholistic affect on the bodies growth. Heavy squats fill out the whole body...just like heavy bench fills out the shoulders and tri's...and yes bench does afftect forearms to some degree. 99 percent of the time when you see a man with well developed upper arms, the forearm will be developed as well...if not then most often you can attribute that to genetic restrictions. Beach trainers aside (M/W/F....chest and bi's trainers) may show lopsided development, but any well rounded trainer will find himself developed as perportionally as genetics will allow....and beyond if enhanced by science.

I see more small forearm/large or decent upper arm people than I can even imagine. They also have decent/big pecs and no back or delts. Or big delts and no torso. Like you can't tell what someone was blessed with

Unless you're in competition, straps are fine IMO. A bench shirt or dl/squat suit in a non-competitive instance is an entirely different story.
