Would it be worth it?

Need to know if it would be worth it to trade a 95 Cobra Convert for a 68 Fastback 6cyl with auto that is in good condition. The fastback needs dashpad replaced, carpet and seat covers, all which are included with the car but also needs headliner which is not included. It runs and drives, I just need to know if it would be a good trade or what should take place. If you know your Mustangs you should also know that the 95 Cobra Convert is also rare and only 1003 were made and is the last of the 5.0L engines. Someone give me some advice!

I'm not a fan of many classics. I hate to say it but I wouldn't get a classic mustang. Maybe a 1st gen camaro but not a fastback. I would keep your cobra. Unless you want a money pit to drive occasionally. Oldschool stuff gets very very very old quick. You will hate driving it everyday or often even. Carbs suck, the interior sucks, the suspension sucks, the brakes suck...trust me.

I agree with everyone here. Keep the Cobra. Keep it stock or mod it and keep the parts you took off. I can assure you that a car is MUCH more fun (even stock) if you can go out, turn the key and drive it anywhere you want to go. Mustangs will always get looks, too. Comfort is relative. I personally like the fact that my 94 has cruise, air, and gets 24mpg on the freeway. Try THAT with a 1968 with OE driveline.

c'mon, what's not to like about this....? :D

it's my 68 fastback, with a 289. full resto, worth around 18,000. classics are nice looking cars, but MustangGT95 is completely right- classic drivetrains and suspension suck.

This decision should definitely be based on how much driving you will be doing. Anymore than occasionally and I would definitely keep the cobra. If you just want something to turn heads or resto and show then get the 68.

I personally own cars to drive but I wouldn't mind having a 67-69 Big block camaro someday. But I would drive it as much as I comfortably could.

I ask myself this question allll the time. My preference in a car is a reliable daily driver, that handles well, brakes well. The '95 does all of that for me. So the answer to your question is- the '95. My '68 is just way too nice of a car to drive as a daily driver- handling is OK (it's lowered an inch and has good shocks), braking is pretty good for a classic (SSBC 11" 4 piston disk brakes). If the 68 hadn't been my dad's car in college and our father-son project, I would have traded you for your Cobra. :) But you never know, things change.

I'm with the majority and say keep the 95. The fastback in question would never replace the value you're losing with the Cobra. It's a V6, so a swap would leave the car as a non matching numbers unit, and unless you do some amazing, and I mean amazing work to it, it won't sell like an old school Camaro or Mopar product...old mustangs just don't have the same value as it's competitors....this is an opinion, and please correct me if I'm wrong...

Maybe it's just that so many people bought Mustangs back then that they still aren't considered major collectibles (that said, owning an specialty mustang from those times can get you some good money at the auctions)

yes mopars seem to be the only model that a numbers mating is completly ilrelevent...

i say since you want drive it all the time keep the 95 it has so many newer features that would be a bear to do with out....if you had any way to get the fastback also and make it a project that would be great..... i wish i could find a older mustang to restore i have a 93 and a 94 that i can drive anytime though

and i thought they never put a big block in a camaro until 69....

I had so many of those old 60's cars!
Stangs
Falcons
Fairlanes
Comets
yada yada yada

I Love Old School

Heck ... I cut my hot rod teeth on those cars :D
I'm perfectly at ease with Carbs
and
Dizzys with points :nice:

They are so simple :)
and
All those parts are tough
is a 9 inch rear beefy
is a 4 speed top loader bullet proof

Tune em up in a flash ;) any way you wanna go
and
NO sensors or anything complicated is present
NO laptop needed cause ... what would you hook it to :rlaugh:

Nothing but a pcv valve :D

Now having said that .......................

You are crazy if you try and put those 60's cars in the same
category as our 94-95 Stangs

They don't handle, stop, and all the rest that has been said like
our Stangs of today ... THE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO! :nono:

I have a perspective most of you folk just don't have :D
but
I can say 60's or 94-95 Stangs both are loved by me :)

They both offer unique opportunities :nice:

If that Cobra is as you say ... You would not wanna do much
in the way of mods to it. Thats the kind of car you restore to
its original oem condition.

I could never own a Trailer Queen :notnice:

I'd not want a car so rare ... I'd be uncomfortable modding it :(

I could not go back to driving a Stang with 185 wimpy rwhp :nono:
True ... A Cobra has a bit more ...
but
Not NEAR enough more to make me happy ;)

Its really all about what you want and expect from your car!

If this car is your dd ... I'd not want Old School for that :(
Heck
You can go too far with mods on our 94-95 Stangs real quick
to render it not all that great for a dd ;)

I see our Stangs of today as an opportunity kinda like this :D

Mine has these benefits: :)
Cold air in the Texas summers
Great sounding tunes (in stereo) from radio or cd
Power far greater than most cars you see on the road
Drivability like a stocker
A lope at idle that turns heads
Highway gas milage of 20+ per gallon
Highway cruise rpm of less than 3K
A tune that works just as good in the summer as the winter

I could go on and on
but
I never got all the above with Old School Stuff :nono:

All you Youngsters ...........
You just don't ... and can't ... see it from a different way
cause
You have only seen things ... as they are now a days :D

Again ... both are great
but
They ain't the same

When I build my last Old School Car ... It will most likely be a
67-68 Stang Coupe Stroked Windsor Pro Streeter

Hey if you're gonna go Old School ... Go All The Way

Hope in some way ... this gave you some ideas

Good Luck with your Decision :)

Even though I'm a younger member here on stangnet, I do understand a decent amount of the classic pony car era, having read vintage-mustang.com forums, Mustang Monthly/Mustang and Fords mags for years and got my hands dirty on the '68 on every single step of its restoration. But of course, not as much as you ol' tymers out there. :flag:

i def. dont know as much about carbs as the old timers either but i have def. got my hands dirty on some thats for sure....i love carbs lol..but they can be problematic..fun cars as toys dont wanna deal with them as a dd though.
