hey, my starter screwes up when the engine is running for 10 minuts or so. it hardley turns over, replaced it with a new one but still have the same problem, put on another but still the same thing. i was thinking what if i wraped the starter with heat tape or something of the same. would that make my starter work better, maybe the starter wouldent get as hot, and it would work o.k. oh ya its a bosch starter.

are you sure it is heat soaked??? if you put a new one in, it sounds more or less like there is an amperage drop somewhere along the line... Have you replaced possibly the negative cable or positive going to the solenoid???

I have this problem. I use a 93 up starter for it's small size.

Replaced the starter twice and it turned out it was the sel. switch.

I'm getting ready to install new headers with wrap.

A heat sheild seems to work for many people.

agreed with all. doing all these things are good measure. i would start with the cables. battery pos and ground. starter solenoid to starter cable (do voltage drop test and visual inspection). and motor grounds. when cables heat up, they have more resistance. so if one is borderline, when it gets hot, that might be too much.
and wrapping a starter is always a good idea, IMHO.

I wouldn't wrap the starter, you might trap more heat in there and shield it. Wrap the header or exaust pipe before the starter by far. I can't remember where I saw it, but I saw a heat shield of the starter; that way it would block exaust heat and still allow air to cool the starter.

ya, the other new starter i had on it before this new one, i had it tested i tried fireing the car and the mechanic put a volt meter on the battery, i cranked over the engine and it only read 9volts, so i replaced it with a nw one and its doing the same,well not as bad but still some. the other one whrn i drove it for a bit and then shut if off it wouldent start untill it cooled off. i replaced the selinoid switch along with new wires.

oh ya about the 93 and up starter, would a starter for a 1993 mustang gt, 5 speed fit on my car. i have an 85 gt 5 speed.

Agreed. Insulation wrap will slow down the "heat soak", but the very means to slow down the heat energy from getting into the starter also slows down the exothermic cooling as-well. It might take you longer to wait before starting the car...

Also, don't forget that the starter face is in great contact with the bell housing....which is a direct heat conduction path into the starter.

I would focus on the wiring and solenoid.

if you click on that link, summit racing it shows it wraped around the starter. how much heat would that heat shield with stand before the heat gets through it i wounder. the starter does not create heat so you wouldent have to worry about getting rid of the heat you just need to keep the heat off of the starter.

yeah it just needs alittle wiring mod done no big deal. Takes 10 extra mins.

Be aware though that your stock starter costs about 30 bucks verses a 93 up starter costs about 100 or so.

But the weight diff is worth it IMHO

On another note I'd just get a scrap section of metal and make a good looking sheild.
If the starter gets wraped it is going to have a kiln effect.
It will take it awhile to get hot but after it's hot it will take it 3 times as long to cool.
