Wrecked: is it me or the car?

you might also need some new rear shocks. my car used to lose controll really easily when the rear would lose traction and when i replaced my rear shocks i found that one was completely blown and the other was on its way. with the new shocks i can keep it under controll now when the rear swings out

if you have 245 or + tire size be very careful man...
I've never had any incident with rain yet but i'm VERY careful everytime i take it when it's raining...

I have a story about this.. I was about togoto some friend's house when MAD rain happened... I mean VERY HARD, some cars were sideway just waiting for this to pass... so half-way of my friend's house I said " **** it, this is way too dangerous..." .. so i came back at home and was like ewww
phone rings, guess it's whom ?
my buds (the guy has a pathfinder) on phone : hey wtf are you doing ?
me: its way too dangerous man
him: what the **** you sissy man with my pathfinder there was no problem
me: dude, i have a 5.0 with 245 tires, it's damn dangerous
him: **** you sissy ! are you kidding me ?
me: **** off.

i think i made the right decision there it was wayy too risky.

but what is it exactly about 245w tires that's bad? not wide enough? Ok this is the question then? can i fit 255/50 16 on stock rims? cuz if i can then i'm gonna get dunlop 5000, i think they will kick a$$!!! they're WR rated, should be awesome. Anyone have them?

also found out that the steering rack is busted , I will need some options to replace it soon...

well in rain, wider can often be WORSE, same story with snow. what happens is it hydroplanes. the wieght is displaced over more area so the tires start to ride on top a thin layer of water and floating rather than sinking to the pavement and hooking. of course it gets worse with speed.

it wasn't a corner, it was a slight turn, maybe 20 degrees, sort of like changing lanes. ok, so wider isn't really better in the rain, that's good to know! I still can't believe this happened!!!!

Well I'm wondering if you had throttle induced oversteer. Weight transfers to the back when accelerating and when you were going around the corner you jumped off the throttle which caused the weight to dive forward and made the backend really light which combined with the weather and the cornering going on caused you to break traction...? You did say you were passing so I'm assuming you were WOT.

hey guys, just wondering if most of you are running stock upper and lower control arms. If so i would suggest getting some aftermarket ones.
The way your stangs act in the rain sound just like my 93 was in the rain until i changed the control arms. First time in the rain i was truly amazed at the difference they made, the car felt firmly planted in the rear compared to the floating like feeling with the stockers.
I dunno how to explain it real good but it felt like a completely different car in the rain compared to the way it was with the stockers

that sort of makes sense, i still think the tires are to blame, cuz honestly sometimes rear tires loose traction and i don't hear any tire screething sounds, that's how tough those suckers are, so they definately can't be gripping the road. And the first wreck was my fault, but the second time the car lost traction was just unbelievable, so I just need new tires. I also suspect a blown shock int he front which may have added to this problem.

THe car when stock espeically has immense low end torque and it can get you in trouble. I have never had stock type tires on my stang so I couldent compare them but I recommend to you to go and look at tire rack and get some tire ratings and read reviews on high performance summer tires. It does not get cold enough (usually) where you are to warrant the use of an all season tire. Me I'm putting out about 400bhp and I drive my car through november in chicago. Wet or dry but snow is terrible and scary with summer tires...did it once and wont ever do it again. For reference I use kumho estaca supra 712's in a 255/40/17. Also, since you autocross you may want to consider getting some new wheels such as 17's or 18's while your buying new tires.

Also, is your MK1 and escort just curious (if not then what is it)?

Yes a blown shock (technically its a strut ) up front cant help things....maybe consider redoing those too. I always readjust my shocks and struts for summer and winter driving and that helps a lot too...although most people dont have that option. The stock type stuff gives you sufficient weight transfer though so you could try that...but I still think its mostly the tires to blame what brand and style are they anyways...

honestly ive never had that problem with spinning out. my car will break them very easily in the rain, but i just back off and itll barely wiggle sideways. from my experience with tires, the cheaper tires have worked best. michelin xgt z4's sucked and have been the worst tires ive ever owned (and theyre damn near $200 each), stock 99+ gt goodyears werent much better, nitto dr's have been ok, and my no name $80 tires i run now have been the best, wet or dry.

i live in florida where we get rain nearly everyday in the summer. all i do is be cautious when pulling out into traffic, and accelerate about as fast as a dump truck so i dont light them up

-the tires i have now are VIPER radials 245/50 16, they suck, period! I need something designed for the rain, so i will be doing a search on tire rack. I am thinking of getting KYB AGX shocks for my stang, then i could maybe even autocross w/ this car. I have other cars for that so the stang is just my cruiser, but occasionaly autocrossing it could be fun.
For tires I'm seriuosly thinking Dunlop sp A2
-Anyone got any suggestions of where to get a steering rack? I want to keep power steering so Ford racing and flaming river stuff is not an option. I'll have to go OEM I guess.

The MK1 in my sig. is an 86 toyota MR2 which we'll use for autocross and road racing. I hope to get into road racing SOOON!

Ahhh there are so many MK1, MK2, etc... That thats not a good description of the car . But yea...has anyone ever heard of viper tires? I know I havent. Oh and if you want to upgrade to some cheap 17's the 98 cobra wheel is nice (but very common ...I have them too) and theres a dealership in texas that sells them for $109 bux each+shipping (forgot the name will try and find it if your interested). They also weight 21-22 lbs so there not that heavy either.

I'm going to stay with my stock gt rims for now. I actually like them a lot, and just want to keep my stang looking original. A local stanger offered 97 cobra rims w/ tires for $400, so if he still has them for next autox season i may get those just for the track and for when i go to the drag strip. But for daily driving i wanna stick w/ my stockers cuz New Orleans has some of the worst streets in US.

Shocks, subframes, good tires, upper and lower control arms, and a panhard bar; I really have to be trying to get sideways for my car to break loose around a corner.
As for the hydroplaning any wide tire is going to hydro on ya especially at higher speeds.

ok, so from what you guys are saying it seems to me like I should just go down to a 225 width tire that's of good quality for daily driving in rainy weather?????? Shoot, that's going to be cheaper as well................. am i understanding this right?

a 225 would be alright for a daily driver but they wont provide a lot of traction on dry roads if you get on the car
