Wrong year blancer! Can I switch pulleys?

I picked up a new Romac 28oz balancer on eBay and didn't realize the style between 86-93 and 94-95 were different. Balancer installed and looks like it fits as the other one, but now my Granatelli underdrive crank pulley doesn't fit because of the mounting surface is flat and not protruding like the 94-95. I would need to build an adapter flange out of aluminum, but I'd rather just buy an A.S.P underdrive crank pulley for a 86-93, they are only about $50. Will this fit my setup?

Firstly, don't you need a 50 oz balancer for a late model 5.0?

a 28oz is for early ( pre-80) engines I thought.

I have that spacer made out of aluminum, just sitting in my tool box. PM me and we can talk about it if you'd like it.

Is it 50oz? Man this motor is throwing curve balls left and right. They seem to weight the same, I need to verify this on a scale asap.

Whoa! Need to slow down and figure out what year crankshaft you have. 80 and up are 50 oz, 79 and earlier are 28. Gotta have the one that matches your crank. Many stroker assemblies are balanced to 28 because it's easier.

There are several after market spacers to align pulleys. Pita to figure out, but doable.

The 5.0 HO uses a 50oz balancer. They list 28oz balancers for the Mustang in those years, but that's for a non-stock application, such as for a stroker that is balanced to 28oz. There's also neutral imbalance harmonic balancers listed for Mustangs, as well. Your stock engine will need a 50oz though.

So would this work for me? Stock crank. Also, I had it balanced at the machine shop with the stock balancer when I rebuilt it. Then someone said they couldn't believe I was using a stock balancer and I needed to get on a better SFI unit asap before I wrecked my engine. Apparently I am a total retard when it comes to buying parts. Sorry guys, im really cranky at the moment. This car is a bottomless money pit.

Yes, that Pioneer balancer would work. I believe that may be the same one I'm running.

Please, let this be the last thing I buy wrong for this car. I am going to be putting up a fire sale soon of brand new parts that either didn't fit or ended up not being what I wanted. I could open my own mustang store about now.

I have one of the 50oz SFI Pioneers in stock and would swap you for the 28oz Romac if you want to cancel the one from Summit since it hasnt shipped yet...

I also have a 50oz Pioneer balancer I would trade you for the Romac. I can't seem to get rid of this balancer I might have better luck getting rid of the Romac. Just for information, you're not going to see any difference on the scale. The oz rating is not the weight of the balancer itself, it's the weight of the counterweight on it. The 28oz is the imbalance of it. So 28 oz imbalance means there is a 28 oz imbalance weight built into the balancer. The flywheel will have another 28 oz imbalance weight on it opposite the side on the harmonic balancer.

Hey guys,

Was out all weekend and didn't get to check this thread til now. I am definitely interested in the trades. I know the order processed but I don't think it went out yet.

Heres the thing- my angle to get my money back on the balancer is they sold it to me "brand new", but when I got it, it looked like the box had been kicked by Pele down a dirt road for a week. It was all taped and chewed up. The balancer was not wrapped in anything. It had light scratches on it, and the protective coating that prevents oxidation and rust was flaking off, it also was starting to show light oxidation. There was also marks suggesting it had been installed a few times, but it was overall too clean to have spent any time on a street car. I'm going to call this place and demand a refund based on the state of the part, that it was unfit for a show engine and was definitely not brand new as advertised. If this fails, I'll trade it.

I lucked out, they are taking it back and giving me a refund. This is great, turns my $270 mistake into a $15 mistake. I'll take it.

This was an eBay purchase from falconglobal. Looks like they might sell parts for various car shops so the descriptions might be out of their hands. At least they are going to do the refund. (if they dont give me the run around after getting the unit back)

I love Summit, I always buy my parts there first. So far they have had the best customer service out of anyone ive dealt with. They didn't sell Romac thats the only reason I went to eBay. But I was wrong to even buy it in the first place

I'd rather buy another brand other than Romac, personally. Several people have commented over the years about how tightly they fit on the crank that they needed to bake them in the oven, to get them to expand enough to fit all the way on. There's no reason at all that they need to be that tight, and if I were to buy one, I'd probably hone it out, so that it fits like it should. That's why I ended up with a Pioneer SFI balancer instead. I know hot rodding is all about modifications, but I shouldn't have to modify brand new parts, just so I can use them.

The Romac should have been in a box wrapped up tight if it was brand new.

FWIW- Almost all aftermarket balancers should be honed to spec, its pretty common practice when building a motor. I would NEVER heat a balancer to install it.....

There seems to be a lot of debate over using a fluid style balancer like the Romac anyway. Most of the engine builders I know much much prefer the elastomer style for a small block ford.
