If you want to work in a Ford dealership, find a local technical college that is part of the Ford ASSET training program. It's sponsored by Ford and you end up with a 2-year degree and a Ford Lead Technician certification. It also costs about half of any of those other places.

What is your current automotive experience? I went to a local school when I first got into the buisness, and it was like learning a forien language in a country I have never been to or met anyone from. After a few year in the buisness, it's a lot better. I don't know what to say as far as which is better. School is a good idea, it does help.

i will be starting at UTI in about 3 weeks. one of the main reasons why i chose UTI over Wyotech was because it would either be go to a small boring town in pennsylvania or the brand new UTI campus 15 minutes outside boston and 2 hours closer to home. other than that i think they are both very good schools.

I'd say go to WyoTech. I went to UTI in Phoenix in 1996-1997 and it blew. They say they'll help you find work and housing while you're going to school but they don't. The classes were 3 weeks long and you barely skimmed the surface of things. Somethings like carbs need 3 weeks by themselves but you read about it in 1 day. WyoTech seems to give more detail in class then UTI ever did. Just my experience there.

wyotech by all means! whatever u do, do not go to nadc! i have worked with many guys that were attending or graduated from there and maybe one out of them all seemed like he learned something. it may have just been that the kids didnt care, but IMHO nadc = teh suck!

One problem with all automotive schools is simply this, they are made to teach all this in two years, and automotive should be at least a four year school. You cannot teach this material in two years. Two years and you are only in an introduction. Maby 20 years ago, but this is another world. The fact is that automotive technology because of emmisions and competition has multiplied in complexity so quickly, probally faster than any other industry short of say military related.

I am an ASE Automotive Master Technician. I work for a Goodyear Service Center. I started out doing General Service, and there is a lot to learn there. I then was an assistand to one great tech, and now I am on my own and let me tell you, I have a lot to still learn. There are so many things you cannot learn in a classroom.

Don't listen to these fresh out of school types that tell you how much they know. There was a guy that posted on this forum that used to list his "certifications" in his signature, and claimed he was fresh out of UTI and didn't need experience because his instructors taught him everything. The truth is, your going to be in the buisness at least 15 years until your really, really good. I've met a lot of techs in my life, and it isn't eas out there.

Maby look into a dealership and tell them you want to learn, many of them will send you to school if you show the initiative. However, you will become dealer specific. I guess I perfer to be a jack of all trades.

You damn right!!! I've been doing this for 15 years myself, even before I went to school and still learn something new at least twice a week. All those schools do is give you a start. You actually learn once you're out of there.

im at nti right n0w and ill tell y0u that it is w0rth it t0 g0. yeah, the classes are sh0rt and y0u d0nt get int0 a wh0le l0t 0f detail 0n s0me stuff, but y0ur in class f0r 6 h0urs a day. and y0u really get 0ut 0f it what y0u put int0 it. s0me 0f the classes are abs0lutely t0rture t0 g0 thr0ugh but every 0nce in a while y0u will get a g00d class with a c00l teacher that wants t0 teach a bunch 0f c00l stuff. the 0nly thing i d0nt like ab0ut this stuff is that they d0nt really teach y0u ab0ut w0rking 0n a car, its m0stly diagn0sis. but i guess w0rking 0n the car is the easy part and diag is the hard part. if y0u just like cars a l0t d0nt g0 t0 the sch00l, but if y0u really want t0 w0rk 0n 0ther pe0ples cars f0r 8 h0urs a day than g0 f0r it. im g0nna be d0ing the F0rd Fact pr0gram and than h0pefully either p0rsche 0r mercedes pr0gram.
