Yokohama AVS Sport: Wandering track

Last summer I picked up some Yoks as my previous tires were shot. Man, those stock BF Goodrich were crap. Traction was not the best. Especially in wet conditions.

The new Yoks are a big improvement in every aspect except one. Especially in wet conditions. It's like driving on rails. My problem is with the ability to hold the line. As I spend more time with them, I am finding this tires' weakness to be tracking. They seem to want to follow EVERY little groove in the road and pull into it accordingly. I've had the alignment checked. It was off slightly, but not enough to make that much difference. It was adjusted accordingly.

Anyone else out there use these tires? Have you had the same experience with them? What tire would you recommend that is the Yoks equal, but without the annoying tracking problem?

Yep yep, Yokohama ES 100s were the same way.

I switched to Falken Ziex ZE-512s and it is a huge difference.

But I think it just has to do with the tires getting old or the tires on the front being too wide and flat...

yeah i have 245's in the front and 275's out back and they def wander where they pleaase on the highway but i love them in the wet and dry...

I beleive it's down to the state of the roads and the big ass trucks cutting the roads up...

Tread patterns have a lot to do with how a tire tracks. Usually tires that have a straight center tread groove or tread pattern in straight rows track better than the unconventional patterns (like the yokos). The Falkens have 2 straight grooves down the middle and track really well. They don't corner nearly as well as the Yokos though, so there is almost always a tradeoff.

Yeah, that's a big problem here in Wisconsin. Everything buckles up in spring and then again when winter comes. Not to mention the area i live in is growing rapidly. The dump trucks/semis are mangling the roads.

I knew when I got the Yoks they would have a tendency to follow the grooves. Just didn't realize how much.

Oh well. Not much I can do about it. Short of getting new tires. Hmmmmm. My right foot might develop a "twitch" this summer.

I am running 265s up front and 295s out back. They do track ALOT. And tracktion is not as good as I expected. Like Steve said, if you have the 'centerline' on the tire, then it will not track as good. But there is a tradeoff, the Yokos are very good in wet conditions, bc they do not have the aforementioned centerline.

I guess it all is a give and take. My next tire will probably be the Eagle F1 GSD 3 which has a similar tread pattern as the Yokos but should give alot more tracktion.

the avs sports are the worst tramlining tire I have ever run. Must be the tred patter but they are at least twice as bad as any tire I have ever ran.

I have cheap nexen tires on my iroc because I put lots of miles on it. they are a great tire belive it or not. great traction with minimal tramline. got them off ebay very cheap. was skeptical but they are a great tier so far. 10k and no complaints.

I have bfg kdw-2's on my mustang now. they are a step up in every way from the yoko's as well IMO. I had just the regular comp t/a on my chevelle and the kdw-2s are a better tire so far. pretty good grip with minimal tramlining.
