Teflon Rear Main Seal - Worth it??

Having built dozens and dozens of small fords over the last decade, I can safely say the run of the mill rear main has stood the test of time for me, in everything from 8 sec cars to 13 sec street rides.

I Accidently scratched the crank when installing my rear main seal, will it leak? And will the balance of the crank be off at all? its a Minor scratch but its pretty good.....

A New Two (2) Piece Rear Main Seal Should NOT LEAK

AZ used to (and still might) sell the Teflon RMS's.

Hi Hissin50

I'm having my 289cid Mustang engine restored. Its been bored-out 000.30ths. My car restorer guy tell me that, " . . . you gota expect a little oil leak with those two new piece rear main seals that we're going to install."

Now if you will please:

Do I have to buy that

And what is a SLEEVE ?

And how if anything would it help a great deal in preventing a rear main seal LEAK

Thanks Guy
GOD BLESS

You can't use a 1-piece RMS on an early block without doing the machine work to make the block and crank work with the 1-pc seal. Machine shop guy is full of "it" if he thinks that a 2-pc seal is supposed to leak when it's brand-new. Heck, I haven't had too many problems with OLD 2-pc seals. :D

You're Right About The Numbers

One...interesting choice in font and font size
Two...you're having in bored .030...not 0.30.

:)

Hey Gearbanger 101

Sorry about the numbers. I still can't count :rlaugh:

But you're right its: .030 ! ! !

Now back to my new two (2) piece rear main seal.

I just can't buy the fact that my restorer guy is telling me that; about having to accept the rear main seal leaking.

I will talk with him (he's a nice guy and the men in his shop are some craftsmen) His engine mechanic seems to think that it will be O.K. and the seal won't leak.

If it does LEAK ~ HE FIXES IT
As far as I concern guys like yourself and the guys on this forum know what the heck they're talk about.

You guys have done the work :hail2:

Thanks Again 4 your impute

GOD BLESS

TEFLON GASKET TO SEAL THE 2 PCS. SEAL

Autozone sells the Teflon gasket...and it's the way to go

Hey Guy

I'm not an engine builder or mechanic. Just a guy who don't know that much about building engines :(

However, I've been a weldor for 17yrs. Whatever that's worth :nice:

All I want to know is:

Any you guys know 4 sure that a: New 2 piece rear main seal will NOT LEAK after installing it

Have any you guys done this work with the 289 engine and NOT HAVE THE REAR SEAL LEAK  YES/NO

THANKS

You may have to order them from Autozone. I got mine from Napa for $25, the cheaper one was $15. Have the teflon in both stangs and no problem. If you are going to do 8 hours of work why not put the better on in?

I used a teflon seal when I rebuilt my motor. Damn thing just started leaking a bit about a month ago so it is what it is.

If you have not buttoned up the thing yet use some fine grit emmory cloth to clean up the scratch u put in the crank.
