Keys insert fine, car starts fine but cannot turn key back to the point where you can remove it from the column. Obviously, it won't turn to the accessory position either. Is this a problem with the lock cylinder or is there an adjustment somewhere? Seems I remember having this problem once before but I don't recall what I did to fix it.

IS this on an automatic car? if so is the shifter all the way in the park position? If yes to both open the hood and check the lock-out rod ( i think that is what it is called) this rod goes between the tranny and the steering column and basically it is to prevent you from pulling the key out of the ignition while the car is in gear or puting the car in gear without the key. There should be a plastic/rubber bushing where the rod conncects to the column. if the bushing has wornout and or is missing the rod will not fully engage allowing you to remove the key.

I had this problem on my 72, and I had a hell of a time finding a replacement bushing.

Hope this helps.

When I had this problem I got the keys out by turning a piece on the column. Its the piece thats above the plastic trim that covers the column. If I remember correctly it is metal and has a large hole in it. I can try to post up a pic later if you want. I don't know how or why it worked but turning that piece and lining it up allowed me to get the keys out.

Exact same problem that I had and that was the fix. It was the plastic trim that wrapped around the column and just neeed to be turned to one side.
