Exhaust systems, best one to boost horsepower

I want to know what the best exhaust system is to boost horsepower on a 2007 Mustang GT. I have read an article that exhaust systems don't really boost horsepower that much on the newer Mustang GTs. Here is an excerpt from the article:

"Mclelland explained to us that modern engines, especially those with variable cam timing like the '05 Mustang, are not going to respond to a reduction in backpressure like older engines do. This is largely in part due to the variable cam timing and wide lobe separation angles used on modern cams. As a result the exhaust system plays very little role, if any, on scavenging and drawing the intake charge to the cylinder. It is no surprise then that we saw no significant power gains on the dyno. The factory '05 mufflers apparently flow well enough to support as much as 425 horsepower. Once you add a blower or increase displacement is when you'll see some gains from the less restrictive Flowmasters."

Exhaust mods are mostly for sound. You're probably not going to feel any SOTP change, no matter which one you go with. 5-10 HP is about the most you'll see from any of the systems out there. Pick one that sounds good.

I purchased Pypes O/R H pipe from Brenspeed which claims +8 HP +10 TQ. Not much increase, but is tremendous sound difference for only $175! I had this with the Flowmaster axleback system(which sounds to me like a 60s muscle car-LOUD and deep rumble)up until last week after one of my mufflers had the baffles break inside causing a horrible "buzz". Flowmaster is sending me a new muffler at no cost. I swapped them for the stock mufflers for the time being which sound pretty fairly muscular with the O/R H, but NOWHERE near the sound with the Flows!

Thanks for the info. I think I am going to install a Pypes O/R H pipe with stock mufflers.

I would recommend the mufflers first. Some Flowmasters will make you car sound a little meaner plus the rolled tips look so much better than stock. After you drive around a while with the Flows it will help prepare you for the THUNDER of the O/R h-pipe. That is a lot bigger jump in decibles than the muffler up grade. You will love it.

I have flows and I wouldnt mind it being a little louder. But I was curious if anyone has flows with an off road Mac Prochamber. I would love to hear a sound clip...

I can't really see the axle backs doing much of anything except for making noise. I have Bassani axle backs, and get a chuckle when people ask what I've done to the car. I usually tell em I added custom noise makers.

I would definitely say go for a full Bassani set up, w/o Cats. I have heard a 2005 GT with them, and a 2004 GT, and they sound insane. They may not have the nice refined sound as the flowmasters or magnaflows, but they produced more horsepower, and they sound like a GTS car for the most part.

Does anyone know if you go with a Off Road X pipe if you will need to buy a tuner as well. I'm thinking by removing the cats you will get a check engine light. Anyone????

Thanks,

Need? No. Good idea? You bet. I can't tell you how many times I've stated and restated how great having a good tune is for these cars. Anyway, if you're interested in a tuner, check out the tech page. There's several recent threads. To go back and fully answer your question, a tuner is not required. You will get a CEL, which can be turned off with MIL eliminators. But you'll be much happier if you get a tune.

+1 :nice:

This system produces 19 hp 20 torque. 15881

I have had the C&L Racer/SCT Xcal 2 combo from Brenspeed on my car for two weeks now. I still have the 3.31 gears and my only other mod is Bassani Hi-Flo cats, X pipe, and axle-backs. I also have the automatic tranny. I get second and third gear scratch w/ 3.31 gears. Traction control on. Nuff said.

Ain't it sweet?!?!?!?!?! Now as good as our cars have become over the factory tune, I sit in awe as to what they are like with F/I...:hail2:  Saw a few at the track this past Sunday, not launching very well at all and still running <12.6s@112+
