Bad day...bent pushrod and valve...need help!

I've never had luck this bad. A friend was bringing my car to me, (I have some licensing issues that will be resolved Tuesday when the local DMV is open, and I don't want to risk anything until then), and he calls me and says the motor is making an awful noise.

My girlfriend brings me to where he is, and the noise is godawful knocking. We had some basic tools on site, and I took off the driver's valvecover, foud some marring on the inside of it, and when I went to match the mar to which rocker (they all were bolted down ok). When I saw the rocker, the spring was uncompressed, the retainers were laying in the head, and the spring topplate and insert were laying outside the spring as well. The pushrod was bent at least 1/8" outwards, and the valve stem was showing at least an inch out of the head, but it wasn't moving anywhere.

Pending my teardown tommorow to get the head off and also check the other valve cover, what should I be doing? I've never had a motor go boom on me like this... I am building that 351W block, but I am no where near completion, and I am not going to go cheap and get it built asap and be stuck here again in a year. At this point I just want to get the car back on the road as soon as possible as cheap as possible to make it safe until I can finish my 351W project.

So, if I am lucky, could I be out a valve, guide, some machining on the head, pushrod, other valvetrain parts, headgasket and headbolt (and intake gasket)? Or is it likely I've got lower end issues as well? What about my cam?

The engine was a GT40P head with the GT40 valvetrain kit, E303 cam, stock 95 longblock. Stock rockers as well.

I could just kill my buddy who was bringing it to me, but who knows, I guess it could have been a preexisting issue (tho I really think it was high-rev valve float)

Also, I may just ship the car out to Scottsdale now and just work on it when I fly out on the 12th. I'm not sure what the best route is, though I really need to accellerate my plans on getting the 351W done.

I have to say that it sounds like he was beating on it a little. The parts that you mentioned are all really good ones. They'd have to be put together wrong, for that to happen, I would think. Don't let him drive any more of your cars. :(

You could just drop another Explorer longblock in there.

i vote to kill your friend...this is why I don't let other people drive my car. Even if he really wasn't beating on it, I'd rather be the one to break it and know for sure why it went!

i would tear it apart and see exactly what kind of damage was done... then go from there. Hopefully you can rebuild it for fairly cheap.

If the valve doesnt move its prolly stuck in the guide....and thats prolly damaged too. If the valve guide is damaged this is gonna ge expensive in a hurry. Plus you dont know the condition of the piston either...cuz it is prolly hitting the valve.:nonono: This isn't looking good.

On a side note..I lost my last motor like that. But for me the spring broke and the keepers came off at 6200 rpm...needless to say the piston ended up in the oil pan (in many pieces) and much of the connecting rod made it onto the expressway....but I digress.

Hopefully your piston is ok...but it looks like a decent amount of head work is in order.

I'm in Pensacola, Florida.

I'm hoping I the damage is contained to the head, but who knows. I heard even VatoZone sells GT40p heads with a core, I wonder how much that would run, though I doubt I'd ever trust the valvetrain components on it.

Yep... sounds like some one pushed the engine hard and the valve foated and kissed a piston.. or the GT40 Spring broke!! Get the head off and check the piston for damage.. if the piston is OK, then AZ sells heads for the "explores" Yep GT40s!! and I believe guys are snagging them for 450 or so.. then upgrade the springs with a performance set.. and put it all back together. If the MONEY is there .. should take a day or two. Key point.. up grade the springs..
Have fun..

Well, I lucked out. Was valvespring float, I'm getting new crane springs (supporting 575 lift and 6500rpm), pulled both heads which are being repaired and ported (I didn't want to since I am building a new motor, but was sold on it when I saw the price and some examples from his flowbench.)

Going to cost $500 when everything is said and done to get the heads remachined, ported, the new springs, retainers, keepers, gaskets, bolts fluids etc. Just a bummer to have to clean the block again and all this labor I have to put in the car, but happy to know what the problem was (which apparently has been a problem for some time, see dynograph in sig), and that I'll be picking up a bit of power as well.

Yikes..!! we all need to go to that shop... $500.00 for ALL that is stealling LOL!!

Have fun..

Lucked out a lot there because its parts that had been on the shelf for some time, and the machinest hasn't had a ford engine of his own for a long time (IE the valve springs are running me $40 new). Also thankfully, he doesn't subscribe to the "hog out every runner" theory a lot of local porters seem to subscribe in this area. Mostly clean up the transitions on the exhaust side with a lot of bowl blending and the bottom side of the exaust port. Intake ports would be gasket matched and bowlblended again.

Piston has a bit of a stamping on it, but I hope I am ok there, turned the motor over by hand, and the piston still comes all the way up, straight and inline with the deck, no evidence of rod issues that I can tell. Turns over fairly easily.
