What do i torque my manifold to on AFR heads???

What do i torque down my Trickflow manifold on my aluminum AFR heads too?? and whats the patter to torque it down??? i cant find my Hayes repair manual and the shop told me to torque it down to like 15-18 ft. lbs. because of the soft aluminum...what is it for sure??? Do i use moly lube???

Be afraid :shock:
Be very afraid of soft aluminum threads anytime or anywhere :eek:

You want to use anti seize for two reasons :D

1) lubes the threads
2) dissimilar metals of Aluminum and Steel sets up a chemical reaction (white chalky corrosive powder) ... the anti seize helps keep that from happening

No more than 18#'s sounds about right :nice:

You will need to run the lower bolts over and over in sequence until they
take a final torque of that 18#'s.

After two heat cycles ... Run em all again ;)

Someone posted that sequence just a week or so ago :shrug:

Now AFR told me do not torque the intake down.. Just snug it down good. Take a very good chance on pulling the threads out.. But that was 3 years ago...

This info is included with the booklet you get with a new set of AFR heads
so what you speak of is good advice for sure.

I refrained from using the word ... Snug ............. Well because .........

My idea of snug is most likely not the same as your idea of snug ;)

Just for the heck of it ..............
After snugging up my Edelbrock lower

I found my torque wrench clicked at about 15#'s on my combo :D

The idea here is to get an even clamping force through out the entire
length of the manifold :nice:

I did mine in two steps of tightness with half in one set of sequences
and half in the final set.

After a couple of heat cycles you will find some will be loose :eek:
so it is a good idea to go over them one final time ;)

I do not use rtv or any kind of gasket sealer on my gaskets as
the gasket itself is for that

Yes ... a litle dab in the corners of places like intake and front cover

Anyway ... You'll end up with two main thoughts here

I don't wanna hose up my soft Aluminum threads :nono:
but yet
How tight is tight :shrug:

A torque wrench can put us all on the same basis of tightness.

Now ... The official Ford Service Manual calls for 23-25#'s
but ...
Oem conditions are such that you tighten bolts in threads of IRON heads

I can only share what has worked for me :shrug:

I use antiseize on intake bolts since they are going into aluminum for the couple reasons that final5-0 stated.

I use oil for engine lube, not bolt thread lube:)
