Said my last goodbye to my 5.0 tonight

Just watched my 5.0 drive away with its new owner, and although it may be surprising to some people, it hurt when I saw it leave. I thought it would be painless.

Bought her in sad, sad shape in 2003 when I was 15 for $1200, sight unseen. She was a 1988 GT hatchback, Oxford white with Scarlet (Porno) Red interior. AOD, 2.73s, not much else. It looked like she had a rough history; defensive driving class papers in it, tickets, and a good deal of rust.

Fixed her up nice with all new panels and paint, and test drove it on a slippery road with a 50 mph speed limit in the middle of winter when I still had a learners' permit. On that first drive, the hood latch failed and destroyed my freshly painted, brand new hood, windshield and roof. So it began.

Drove it to high school and back everyday when I was 16. Boy was I king of the parking lot. That summer, I bought 3.73 gears to wake it up, and they did just that. My dad also bought a red '87 GT convertible for $1100. That was going to be the replacement. A gorgeous red GT convert at 16? What could be better? Well, as hard as I tried, I could never let my hatch go. We sold the red convertible for $12000 last week; it was my dad's project.

Then the transmission started slipping. The previous owner probably did a few too many 1D1 shuffles, and I was the one to pay for it. Might as well make it fun. In went the Ford Racing wide ratio kit (only cost me $100!!!), 2200 RPM stall converter, and a wicked valve body. She went.

Turbines suck, so I put on a set of 5 lug, 18x9 Cobra R's in gunmetal. Wrapped them in Nitto NT555 235/40ZR18 tires and went with it. Those set me back around $1000, but she looked cool. At the same time I put on a set of Steeda upper & lower control arms (the good ones that run around $700 for a set of 4). Now she had traction.

Then I thought performance wasn't sufficient, so I bought a pair of chrome Bassani equal-length headers (for $125!), a Bassani stainless catless X-pipe (for $167) and a Cobra intake (for $193!). Gave her a few more ponies. Then came the supercharger. A nice ProCharger P600B, with 30# injectors and 80mm mass air meter. Paid $1100, shipped. I swapped to mass air for this, and it ran like ****. Around this time I paid $850 for a pair of Twisted Wedge heads, but the seller decided to not send them, and keep my money! Well, off came the injectors and mass air conversion, and parted out the car.

Then I added a 3000 RPM stall converter and 275/50R15 ET Streets. Now she could REALLY launch.

I took it to the track last September for the first time. Put on my ET Streets and she gave all she could. She went 14.39 @ 92.01 MPH, with a 1.9768 60'. Not bad for a first timer.

After not being able to sell the car for awhile, I thought might as well try again. So I bought a Turbo Technology Inc. turbo setup for a good price. Being in college, I couldn't afford to piece it all together, or even keep the car, so it had to go. That turbo setup just made 412whp, and 500+ ft. lbs of torque on another car.

The new owner is still skeptical, but he gave me $4500 for a car that needed some rust attention. Every year it just sat in storage, developing rust on the quarter panels that I got sick of fixing. I drove it twice this year. He's a body man, so I'm sure she'll be gorgeous again.

From all the bucks spent maintaining my baby, all the fun I had street racing with it, having the coolest car at my school, even though I took a major loss on this car, I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. I turn 20 next month, and I guess this is my goodbye to my teenage years. Thanks for reading.

man i dont know how people can sell their foxes especially one that you put so much work into. I had my fox since I was 17, my first car, bought it bone stock, and you would have to pry the thing from my dead fingers.

With a history like that i don't know how you could sell that car. I got mine when i was 16 and i've loved mine ever since i got it. It was my dream car and i got it. You'll have to kill me to get to my car! Your still crazy for selling it!

That's quite a story...few people take time to document their personal Mustang saga. You should make a nice slide show movie with your pictures and comments. Thanks for sharing :nice:

Now I'm going out to the garage to give my '88GT a hug and a kiss :D

good story...do what you have to do man, i understand....as i to have had my car since i was 16, and if you told me i was gunna sell it a year ago, i would of hit u for sayin that and then hit myself for even thinkin about it.....but now being 21 and needing to pay for school....looks like she might be going in the spring..:(

It's sad but you'll probably wind up with another one down the road a ways. I bought my first Fox when I was 19 in 1992. It was a black 86 GT with 45k on it I paid 5 grand for. I bought it new years day, and it wound up in a snowbank 3 days later on my way home from work. Broke one of the billion dollar marchal fog lights and put a hole in the radiator. I fixed it, then promptly put it away and bought a truck for the winter. I got in a ton of trouble in the car for the next 2 years, and finally decided to get rid of it. Last year I happened to find a rust free bright red 85 t top gt on craigslist. Paid 3 grand for it, and i've spent more than that on parts in the last year. It's way nicer than my 86 ever was, and I am able to control myself a bit better now so I don't get into trouble. It's going to be a keeper. It's actually kind of funny, back when I had my 86 one of my closest friends had a semi-ratty 69 camaro, and another had a really ratty 69 mustang. Now I have my 85, which is pretty nice, and one friend has a sick 68 camaro show car with an LS1/six speed, and the other has a crazy 69 mustang pro street style car with an 8/71 blower through the hood. I us older guys really do like to relive our past.

I said I would never sell the first Mustang I had either!!! That was 5 years ago, and I have had 11 Mustangs since then, but out of the 11, I still own 3 of them. Two are driveable..(but kept in garage) then other 1 is at my work under construction.

Thats chitty man...i would have considered that stang totalled when you bought it and wouldnt have wasted my time. But you made it look nice again...the way it should. sounds like you had some good fun with it...you'll come back them in a couple years once you start makin some dollars. And you'll do one up even better.

I never said anything about it being my first Mustang :)

Sitting in a barn is my first car; bought it sight unseen when I was 13 for $405 US out of Connecticut. It's a Caspian blue 1964 Mustang coupe with a 260 V8 and C4. Original power steering and power brakes, 22000 original miles. Owned by an old lady until 1987, then it sat in a garage for years. Very little rust on it. I'd like to see it done soon, but time will tell.

Next fun car? Since I have the cash flow of 2 jobs, and I'm on good terms with my rents, I'm looking at a Porsche 911 Carrera (non-turbo ones are cheap now), a Ferrari F355, or maybe a Lotus of sorts.

ya, seriously get your own place.

Let's see, pick a girl up in a jeep wrangler and take her back to your place, or explain to her that you sunk your money into a sinking investment which will lead you to taking care of yourself at the end of the night...hmmm.

I knew I sensed a firm hand shake over there

ehh i give you 3 months tops you'll be in another torque monster. ive been away from mine for over 3 months and it sucksss....

you had a long history with that car im surprised you could let it go also. im with aliate x on this one, mines gonna have to be pryed from my dead fingers aswell.

I should put a few details in here.

The housing market in my city has exploded over the past 5 years. $200000 will get you a 1000 sq. ft house these days, in a decent neighborhood. I want nothing to do with some of the worse ones in the city. Apartments aren't cheap either, and most girls wouldn't be impressed by what my salary would rent.

I'm only 19 (20 next month), so moving out is not a priority at all. I saw a statistic somewhere that said the average Canadian male moves out for the last time at 29. I also don't like to follow the basic "get a job, move out, get a family" line. Well, at least not yet.

A 1999 Porsche Carrera can be had for $25000 these days. An F355 for $60000. Assuming I'd pay it off in 4 years, I could still move out at 24. That's not bad at all.

Torque monster? Yeah..I also have my eyes on a gorgeous Skyline in Japan right now. It would go.
