5spd and 3.73's

The wheel diameter has nothing to do with RPM. It is the overall height of the tire that changes the RPM. The factory 17"s are 27.1" tall, while the factory 18"s are 27.2" tall. You may not even notice that difference with an analog tach.
If you have different size tires that stock, then it will be different. Taller tires will have a lower RPMs while shorter tires will have higher RPMs.

Another thing I don't understand is how some people say that 20"s fill up the fenders better than 17"s or 18"s:shrug: It fills up nearly the same space. Only it does it with more wheel and less tire. So taking the above factory tire heights and compare them to a 255/35/20...that is 27" tall...shorter than both factory tires. A 265/35/20 is 27.3" tall...only .1" taller than the factory 18"s. Neither of those 20" tires will greatly affect you RPMs vs the factory 17"s & 18"s. Thus wheel size matters not for RPM difference.

this is absolutely true. kool was just trying to paint the entire picture. sometimes people fail to see the "big picture" and skip over the basics. i know there have been many threads over and over on gears swaps, tire sizes, etc. someone always asks something basic, or does not ask all the questions they should. its nice to get all the information to make an informed decision. not everyone has the same experience/knowledge as everyone else.

i dont believe kooldawg was targeting your reply. thats not his style. please dont jump to conclusions. afterall, this is the internet, and communication is limited to what we see typed out on the screen. sometimes what the person actually meant and how it was recieved are two completely different things.

The question was not "about" what RPMs will I be turning. I gave him an exact answer which is totally dependent on tire diameter. The circumference is the distance the car will go in one rotation of the tire. If you know the distance the car goes in an hour (70 Miles), the to figure the exact RPMs you must know how many times the wheels turn in that hour. This is standard fractional analysis. Now since I said 17's at 45R that gives you the outside diameter, which you termed "tire height". Don't use just diameter, it's ambigous, because there is an inside and outside diameter. I think you made the mistake of assuming everyone was talking about the inside diameter which I for one, was not.

a 225 45R 17 tire is not the same height as a 315 45R 17, but they are both 45R. so to leave out the entire tire size does nothing for the equation. you need to know the height of the tire. rim size does nothing inless you have the entire size of the tire.

I guess I don't understand how the wheel (rim) diameter makes any difference assuming the overall tire height or diameter is the same. I guess the way I see it, if the height of both items are the same, doesn't that mean they will make a full revolution at the same time, regardless if it's a bicycle tire, tractor tire, car tire, etc...?
