erasing KAMs with A9L tune loaded in slot #4

Wes recommended the above-mentioned method of erasing the KAMs (as opposed to disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes like i had been doing, lol), but i was wondering on the exact process of actually doing it. here's what i'm thinking:

1. write A9L tune to a position on the switch -- in my case, i have an A9L on position #4
2. turn off key
3. leave switch on position #4
4. turn key to "run", leave it for a few seconds
5. turn key off
6. turn switch to whatever other position w/ a real tune
7. turn on car, or keep tuning, as normal
8. BAM! KAMs erased?

is that the correct way of doing it? anyone care to share their method?

where do you see what the KAM values are to check them to see if they "zero out"? somewhere in CalEdit? or through an obd-1 code reader?

btw: major props to Wes for letting me bug him for all this tweecing stuff on AIM :flag:

I used the A9L (bad tune) in position #4 to clear KAMs too. I just put the switch to #4 turn the key to on and car not running. The fuel pump primes and the fan turns on. I do this for just a couple of seconds. I always turn the key off before switching to another position - don't know if it makes a difference but I don't want to chance corrupting anything. You will know the KAMs are clear in Calcon when you go to datalog you will see the KAMs at 1.00 and they won't move for awhile until the car warms up and adaptive kicks in. I I let the car idle until it reaches normal operating temperature and then turn on Calcon to see if the KAMs are moving. If I need it to move faster, I go for drive to get them moving.

After a few times doing this I became more comfortable knowing that the KAMs were cleared whenever I did this trick. In other words, now I just turn to #4, clear KAMs and do my thing - no more double checking because I became comfortable with the method. I've been doing this from the 1st day I started TwEECing - never did the battery thing it's a waste of tuning time.

That's basically how I did it...
I was tuning with an X3Z though, don't remember what file I used for clearing KAM...

Not sure if it matters, but I too always turned the key off when changing to or from the 'bad' tune.
On several occasions I changed the tune with the car running, but I was dorking around with something else at the time.

I do not think it would matter, but one thing to note is that I also set my Strategy to A9L when uploading the "corrupt" tune.

I'm not sure if the out of range values are resized into proper values according to your strategy or not, but selecting A9L would prevent this and make it all work out. What you are doing is introducing bad values into memory locations triggering a routine in the PCM that clears the learned data.

that is how i did it, but i put the invalid tune into position #1

key off
switch to bad tune
key on for a few seconds, fan and fuel pump turn on
key off
switch back to current tune
start car

datalog shows kamrfs as 0

not fishing for compliments or anything, but i was actually the one who started the thread about it over on the old tweecer forum a few years back ... wow that was 3 years ago now

cool!

you aren't worried you'll lose the switch and wind up having the bad tune as the default?

hmmmm ... good point. i have my switch routed back behind the kick panel and into the glove box, so i'm not woried about losing it, but i probably should have my latest good tune on #1 and put the a9l somewhere else, just to be safe. #4 would be the next most logical slot for it ...

Zero?

Still haven't seen anyone blame this for any tune degradation problems... or anything else for that matter :nice:

sorry ... 1.0 is right ... i was thinking of cleared as 0 ... i have done so little tuning in the last year, details like that have gotten sorta fuzzy

thanks, Al. yeah, Wes lol'd when i told him i was still using the 'disconnect battery' method, hehe.

No problem. I see lots of peeps do this. I always suggest to peeps to not put the bad tune in position 1 because that's the default tune and if they lost the switch or the switch goes bad they will be SOL. However, if they do choose to use switch 1, it could double as an antitheft device - the best antitheft device on the market too.:D

I assumed it was a typo, but I had to mess with ya' :D

I ran my X3Z on a a 'bad' tune when I first started using the tweecer...
(I didn't think the tweecer would have a tune written to it when delivered new  , who knew... )

The car did run, but it wouldn't have driven down the road.
Not sure what the tune was, I never looked into it.

Seems like everytime I search for an answer to my Tweecer tuning questions with the search button they all come up in the 94-95 section :notnice: :p

Im trying to do this same approach with my 87 (A9L from a 92 though). I know this is the 94-95 forum but since it's a somewhat universal tip I figured I would ask here.

I tried to load in a CBAZA strategy but I'm either doing it wrong or it's not working

I see you can use the J414? strategy to clear the kams in the A9L but I dont even see J414 in the Strategy drop down box?

Sooo step by step how do I load a "kam clearing" strategy into a knob tweecer position?
I selected CBAZA from the drop down box and wrote it to #4 position. Went back to the drop down box and selected A9L. Read from #2 (A9L strategy) turned off key. Turned knob to #4, turned on key, fuel pump primed, waited a couple more seconds, turned off key, turned it back to #2, started up and started to datalog and they were not at 1.

Did I do it right? If not can someone tell me how to do it the Right way. Much Appreciated

Try looking for J4J1.bin

Or just use something else
LA3
PK1
PE*

I think I was using a DDX or DD4... I have no idea what car that file would run, but it did clear my kams...

I don't think you need to change strategies to do this... you are just loading the .bin/.ccf to a switch position...

shoot me a pm if you like...

Watch out sn95 dudes...
the Fox dudes are gonna take over :nice:
