I got nasty road tar on my black Cobra once. I spent 9 hours getting it off. I used a combo of gasoline, lacquer thinner, and rubbing compound with my rotary wheel. The gas and the lacquer thinner did not damage the finish. It broke down the tar, and of course dulled the paint, but the polish/rubbing compound brought it right back. The underside of the car had it too, but I left it...who cares about the underside...I figured it was good undercoating.
