I am considering getting an FRPP 302 and I don't know if my 289 is considered reverse rotation. I guess it wouldn't matter except that I have power steering and I don't know if that will be affected by rotation direction.

Or, if there is a better source for a high quality $4700 crate motor w/ a new roller block, alum heads, etc. I'm all ears.

MY goals are torque and long life, not high horsepower.
 
i think you're confusing engine rotation with waterpump rotation.

it depends on which side the outlet of your radiator is.

if the lower port is on the passengers side of your rad, then it's normal rotation, thus get an old-style water pump.

if it's on the lower right, then it's reverse rotation, so get a newer late-model water pump.

:nono: :nono: Wrong info. Reverse rotation has nothing to do with the inlet of the waterpump. Passenger side inlet pumps are all std rotation, but the driver's side pumps can be either. The rotation change went with the serpentine belt routing. The late 80's to 91 Crown Vic/Marquis/Lincoln town cars were all std rotation pumps with a serpentine style belt (flat belt instead of "V") The 79-95 Mustang 5.0, late 80's pickup/van 5.0 & 5.8's had reverse pumps, as did the 88-93 T-Bird/Cougar and the 96-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0's. Everything else had std rotation pumps.
 
What I should have asked is what will I need to change (water pump, radiator, power steering pump) going from a stock 289 to a new 302 or mild 347 (torque biased) roller crate engine? I'd like to use my fairly new 3 row rad, alternator, and power steering pump. (I am planning to get a new dist).
The only other thing is would my newly rebuilt 8" 3.55 have the strength to handle a mild 347? Thanks.

It all depends on what accessory drive you mount onto the motor. Correct me if I'm wrong but the crate motors don't come with anything past the timing cover ? If you reuse all of the accessory drive from the 289 you will be in good shape. Do you have an electric fuel pump ? If not you will need to swap the timing cover and fuel pump stuff from the 289 to the new block as well.

What carrier and how many spline axles do you have in the 8" ?
 
You can use anything you want, but depending on the timing cover on the crate motor, you can't always mix accessory drive parts. Lots of those crate motors from Ford come with the Explorer timing cover, that cover was also used in the 88-93 T-Bird/Cougar & the 94-95 Stangs. These all use a short reverse rotation waterpump and their own unique accessory brakets. If you choose to use the 289 stuff, you'll need to use the 289 timing cover too and remark the crate's balancer to align the timing marks to the 289's pointer. The 8" rear will handle it ok, depending on how you apply the power and torque to it. Put sticky tires on and subject it to frequent burnouts and it'll have a short lifespan. Otherwise, take it easy with it and it'll do fine.
