Well the time has come to sell the impractical daily driver that my 86 mustang is.

I am seriously considering buying a ranger, i need a pickup, need good mileage and of course it has to be a ford!

Has anyone had any prior experience with rangers? Anything i should watch out for? Realisticaly will i get better mileage with the "probably" under-powered 4 cylinder or the 6 cylinder?

Thanks

I ordered an '08 XLT about a month ago, should be here June 26th, and I picked the 4cyl engine. I'm driving a "loaner" now with a 3.0 V6 and I'm getting 21-22mpg with mostly highway driving - 4 cyl should get 24-25 mpg from what I'm hearing. The old cam belt 8 spark plug 8 valve 4 cyl felt pretty weak, but the new 16 valve DOHC timing chain 4 cyl should be a much better engine, and it only makes about 5hp less than the 3.0 V6 now.

Well my dad has owned 3 rangers. They are good and reliable, his last one,a 02 ranger had just under 300kmiles on it when he traded it in.Only things he did to it was normal maint. and a belt tensioner. But when he got rid of it,it was needing a valve job.As for gas mileage he was getting around 20-22 on they hwy with a v6,the one he had before that was a 99 with 200kmiles and same story same mileage but with a 4 banger. My mother in law has a 97 that looks like it should be in a junk yard but runs very good, and the mpg is in line with my dads other 2,his 3rd I dont really know anything about.

Oh and all the mpg I said was all hwy,in town i think it was around 16-17

They dont get the best gas mileage... My dad had a 93 v6 3.0, and traded it in 05 for a 05 ranger FX4 (v6 4.0).

The FX4 is tons of fun to drive in the snow! Even with the crappy stock goodyear tires, it gripped and handled so well. If I were to get one, I would get the FX4! :)

My brother has a '04 v6 Ranger Edge XLT with an auto and 125k miles that he wants to sell. I think he gets about 20-22 mpg combined. He wants $7,000 for it. It is in great shape and I have to drive to Houston in a few days if you are interested I will send you some pics and I could deliver it to Houston for you. It is an extra-cab step side truck with after market wheels and tires. If interested email me back.

Thanks for confirming the very reason why I did NOT buy an overpriced Tacoma:

"power windows/door locks/outside mirrors, remote keyless entry system, cruise control - NOT AVAILABLE" (Unless you opt for the larger cab)

Pretty sad when you can pick every single available option on the regular cab Tacoma, just to find out that the Ranger was still cheaper...and figure out that the Ranger had every option on it that the Tacoma didn't have.

i have owned my 95 ranger for about 9 years and 240K miles. it is a 3.0 V6 2WD. the engine is BONE STOCK except for a cam sensor. i have NEVER replaced anything on it!! i did have to put a couple of transmissions in it. (stupid driving when i was younger) other than the transmissions it has been the best vehiclei have ever owned.

and as far as power goes. a 3.0 is just as weak as a 4cyl.
