advise on tapping the oil pan

it seem staright foward, but i **** up everything i touch. and the last thing i need to do right now is ruin my oil pan. i really would hate to yank the motor to change the pan, with out the funds to go all out, just because i couldn't tap a line to the pan right.

any advise, walk through, write up , video would be great

Thanks
Joe

hold a magnet next to the bit...it will collect the shavings, that and the grease is the best way.

Or better...if you can have someone hold a shop vac up against it, you should get almost none.

WHen I drill out lead in my pinewood derby cars to adjust the weight, I hold a shop vac against it and almost NO lead is left on the drill press.

Good Luck!

I'm a fan of using progressively larger punches then greasing a tap every turn or so to do the deed.

Works great, you won't get any shavings in the pan and you get a much better "bite" by using punches vs drilling IMHO.
