Rebuilding my 289

I am also preparing to rebuild my 289

I am also about to put my 1966 in the shop for a rebuild with about 2k to spend. I want more power of course, not an extravagant amount but still want to be the king between the stoplights. What components should I use to get this. I want to upgrade to a 4v and am wanting a cam with a wicked sounding lope. What can anyone suggest that I need to do to this motor? I have never done this and am quite unschooled in mechanics. If you could suggest a list I'll print it out and take it to the mechanic. Thanks.

That's a loaded question(s)... you really need to decide what the purpose of your ride is going to be. If it is a daily driver, a wicked cam is not going to be a lot of fun for most (in addition to providing little vacuum if you have power brakes) when driving around town. You can put in a mild cam (an upgrade from stock) and a new intake / carb combo for your 4v switch over with a good exhaust and it will sound like a screamer. Throw in the right gearing and it will make a pretty substantial difference in the wow factor you feel in the seat of your pants.

Anyway, I am a novice in comparsion to a lot of guys on this forum... but if you ask the right questions, they'll hook you up with some good answers.

Comp Cams 268H cam, Ford A321 intake, top it with a Holley 570 Street Avenger carb. Add headers. And do what 67topless suggested and change the rear gear ratio. You'll want something like 3.50 to 3.70's out back, with a posi unit. And port the exhaust sides of the heads.
